Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W463)

Pre-series W463 build began in June 1989, the Italy-only long-wheelbase 200 GE entered standard production that September, and the wider range followed in April 1990. It transformed the Geländewagen from a utilitarian off-roader into a permanent four-wheel-drive luxury SUV — ABS, three locking differentials, and a wood-trimmed cabin that rivalled the S-Class.

Over nearly three decades it accumulated the widest engine range ever fitted to a single Mercedes-Benz model series — four to twelve cylinders, naturally aspirated, turbo, supercharged and twin-turbo — while AMG variants from the G 36 to the G 65 turned it into a celebrity status symbol, especially after the official US launch for model year 2002.

Body styles spanned short-wheelbase two- and three-door wagons, long-wheelbase five-doors, cabriolet and numerous specials (500 GE, 6×6, 4×4², G 650 Landaulet); production ended in 2018 when the ground-up second-generation W463 entered series build at Magna Steyr in Graz.

W463 side profile
The long-wheelbase five-door that defined the civilian G-Class for a generation.

Year by year.

Nearly three decades of facelifts, engines and special editions. These are the milestones that matter when dating a first-generation W463.

  1. 1990
    • The W463 entered production with permanent four-wheel drive.
    • Three driver-selectable differential locks were standard.
    • ABS became available because the new centre differential could release driveline tension during braking.
    • A passenger-car-style dashboard and wood trim distinguished the W463 from the professional G.
  2. 1993
    • The 500 GE V8 appeared as a limited series of 446 vehicles.
    • The range adopted G-prefix names under Mercedes-Benz’s new passenger-car nomenclature.
    • The G 320 replaced the 300 GE with the four-valve M104 six-cylinder engine.
  3. 1996
    • The G 300 Turbodiesel replaced the G 350 Turbodiesel with the four-valve intercooled OM606 engine.
  4. 1997
    • The M112 V6 replaced the M104 inline-six in the G 320.
    • Front-passenger airbags joined the driver airbag.
  5. 1998
    • The M113-powered G 500 became the regular-production V8 flagship.
    • White indicator lenses and bichromatic rear lamps identified the G 500.
  6. 2000
    • A major facelift introduced a redesigned dashboard with a multifunction steering wheel.
    • COMAND became available with navigation and integrated audio controls.
    • The G 400 CDI replaced the G 300 Turbodiesel as the most powerful diesel.
  7. 2001
    • The five-cylinder G 270 CDI joined as the entry diesel.
  8. 2002
    • Mercedes-Benz officially launched the G 500 and G 55 AMG in the United States for model year 2002.
    • Clear-lens headlamps provided an exterior dating cue.
    • Revised exterior mirrors provided another dating cue.
  9. 2004
    • The supercharged M113K replaced the naturally aspirated V8 in the G 55 AMG.
  10. 2006
    • The OM642-powered G 320 CDI replaced both the G 270 CDI and G 400 CDI.
  11. 2007
    • Bi-xenon headlamps became available in the updated lighting package.
    • A reversing camera became available.
    • The G 500 adopted the 7G-Tronic automatic.
  12. 2008
    • The G 500 adopted the 5.5-litre M273 V8.
    • A three-louvre grille identified the exterior update.
  13. 2010
    • The G 350 BlueTEC replaced the G 350 CDI with SCR exhaust treatment.
  14. 2012
    • A new dashboard introduced a freestanding central display and updated COMAND.
    • The biturbo M157-powered G 63 AMG replaced the G 55 AMG.
    • The biturbo V12 G 65 AMG joined as the range flagship.
  15. 2013
    • The G 63 AMG 6×6 added portal axles and a third driven axle in limited production.
  16. 2015
    • The G 500 and US-market G 550 adopted the 4.0-litre M176 biturbo V8.
    • The G 500 4×4² added portal axles beneath the standard five-door body.
  17. 2017
    • The Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet combined portal axles with a folding rear roof section.
    • The 65-unit Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition marked the end of the V12 model.
  18. 2018
