The W210 E-Class brought a new design language and electronic sophistication to the executive segment — the S210 estate carried those advances into the most practical body in the range, with a load bay sized for European family life and a chassis that finally replaced the venerable W124.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the S210 E-Class wagon in 1996 alongside the W210 sedan, sharing the four-link front and multi-link rear suspension, ESP stability control, and a range of inline-four, V6, and V8 engines. The estate body featured a flat load floor, optional third-row seating, and self-levelling rear suspension; diesel variants including the E 220 CDI and E 270 CDI made the S210 a favorite of high-mileage drivers and commercial fleets across Europe.

Produced from 1996 to 2003, the S210 E-Class wagon bridged the W124 T-Model and the S211 generation — an estate that brought W210's elliptical-headlamp styling and electronic safety systems to the load-carrying market.

  1. 1998
    • The S210 reached the US as the E 320 wagon with a 3.2-litre M112 V6, five-speed automatic, rear self-levelling suspension and a rear-facing third-row seat.
    • Its estate-specific body placed the fuel tank beneath the load floor behind the rear axle, with a reinforced rear structure and a warning for an incompletely latched split rear backrest.
  2. 1999
    • E 320 4MATIC joined the US wagon range, using the permanent all-wheel-drive system with four-wheel electronic traction control.
  3. 2000
    • The model-year facelift changed more than 1,800 components: the hood and grille were lowered, the front bumper and mirrors were reshaped, and the tail lamps gained a revised internal pattern.
    • Windowbags became standard and the steering wheel, instrument cluster, centre console and door trim were revised.
    • European cars completed the change to CDI diesels with E 270 CDI and E 320 CDI variants; E 430 4MATIC and AMG 4MATIC wagons also appeared in limited markets.
  4. 2003
    • Final US model year for the E 320 and E 320 4MATIC wagons; S210 production ended in December 2002 before the S211 replacement arrived.
