Fritz Nallinger.

His father helped build Untertürkheim. He ran everything developed inside it: fighter engines and the 300 SL, the W196 and the 600, a failed small Mercedes and the engine that brought Audi back from the dead.

On 31 December 1965, Fritz Nallinger retired after forty-three years at Daimler-Benz, twenty-five of them on the board. That was the company's arithmetic. It counted the years when Allied denazification had removed him from the company too — the interruption was folded back into the career.

The neat total suits a life the company preferred to tell neatly. Nallinger was a brilliant engineer and an unusually gifted chooser of engineers. He was also a Wehrwirtschaftsführer and a wartime board member of a company sustained by coerced labour. The postwar Mercedes he made possible cannot be understood by cutting away what came before it.

The same first name

Friedrich Karl Hugo Nallinger was born in Esslingen on 6 August 1898, the fourth child of another Friedrich Nallinger. The father had risen from a Swabian wine-growing family to the board of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, helped lay out the new Untertürkheim works in 1904, moved to rival Benz as chief engineer in 1912, and eventually sat on the board of the merged company. His son went by Fritz largely because Friedrich was already upstairs.

At thirteen or fourteen Fritz patented a motor-car headlamp reflector and sold the rights to Zeiss for 2,000 gold marks. He qualified as a pilot during the First World War, studied mechanical engineering at Karlsruhe and graduated in 1922 with “very good” marks. His thesis concerned an overhead-valve high-performance six-cylinder engine. That November he joined Benz — helped by his father, one scholarly biography concedes, but also by the diploma.

He raced because Carl Benz believed engineers should. Nallinger won the Swiss Alpine Trial in 1924 and finished second to Caracciola at Baden-Baden in 1925. In 1928 he became head of all testing and the closest collaborator of Hans Nibel. The boy with a patent was now responsible for learning what every car and engine in the company did when theory met the road.

Capítulo II

One hundred thousand engines

In May 1935 Nallinger became technical director for large-engine development: aircraft, ships, railcars and army vehicles. Secret trials with direct petrol injection produced the DB 601, the inverted-V twelve that broke aviation records in 1937 and 1939 and later gave the 300 SL its defining technology. He created a special-powerplants department under Karl Leist; its DB 007 became one of the earliest turbofans ever built, then was cancelled for being too complex.

The achievement served rearmament. The Wehrmacht appointed Nallinger Wehrwirtschaftsführer in September 1938. He sat on the advisory board of the Genshagen aero-engine works from 1940, became a deputy Daimler-Benz board member that April and a full member in 1941. During his tenure the company built roughly 100,000 aero engines.

By 1944 almost half of Daimler-Benz's 63,610 workers were civilian forced labourers, prisoners of war or concentration-camp inmates. At Genshagen, whose technical success his biographer attributes substantially to Nallinger, coerced workers outnumbered free German workers and women from Ravensbrück laboured inside a concentration-camp satellite. No located document ties Nallinger to a specific labour decision. The record shows what he presided over, not what he ordered.

On 19 January 1945, as Germany collapsed, Nallinger presented a scheme for a carrier aircraft that would carry a disposable bomber toward the United States; its crew would land on the enemy coast and wait for a U-boat. Since 1943 he had criticised armament projects on technical grounds. That was technical criticism, not political resistance.

A party card is disputed. The offices he held are not.

A Daimler-Benz-commissioned study found no party file and listed him as a non-member. A later scholarly biography says he joined on 1 May 1937. The conflict is unresolved.

Nallinger sat on the plant's advisory board. By late 1944, 68 per cent of its workforce was coerced; a satellite camp held women deported from Ravensbrück.

Responsibility

No exculpation by silence

No document found names him in a specific requisition or punishment. He was nevertheless a full board member while the system expanded. Both statements belong in the same sentence.

The special assignment

The corporate biography says that from 1945 to early 1948 his mandate “rested” because of a special assignment from the French government. The scholarly record is less decorous: Nallinger was compelled to leave Daimler-Benz under Allied denazification rules in October 1945. The French work followed the removal; it did not cause it.

In November the French assembled German turbomachinery engineers under him at Bregenz, in their Austrian occupation zone. The group moved to Nay and then Bordes near Pau, where it designed large aircraft turbines for a bureau attached to Joseph Szydlowski's Turbomeca. Szydlowski was a Jewish Polish engineer who had fled Hitlerism and then the Wehrmacht. No source says the two men met. The configuration is sufficient.

Paris cancelled the turbine project as too ambitious. Nallinger returned on 28 April 1948 and resumed responsibility for design, testing and development across every vehicle division. From 1951 he set six passenger-car programmes around wide unitary bodies, subframes, smaller wheels, injection, automatic transmissions and disc brakes. More fundamentally, he moved Mercedes engineering from empirical development toward calculated design.

He also created technical board meetings alongside the ordinary board meetings because engineering kept losing weight in the first room. Under his leadership Daimler-Benz became the world's largest commercial-vehicle manufacturer. The glamorous cars were the visible fraction of a programme that ran from buses and Unimogs to marine engines and locomotives.

A little window

Nallinger, Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Alfred Neubauer began discussing a return to racing in the early 1950s. Nallinger suggested using the new 300 saloon as the basis of a sports racer, as Jaguar had done with the C-type. The resulting 300 SL opened what he reportedly called “a little window” onto motorsport; direct injection carried his aero-engine work into the first production four-stroke passenger car to use it.

The window became a wall of trophies. Under Nallinger, Hans Scherenberg and Uhlenhaut developed the W196 and 300 SLR: Fangio took two Formula One titles, Mercedes won ten of thirteen championship Grands Prix, and the sports car won every major event it finished. At Le Mans in 1955 Pierre Levegh and eighty-three spectators died. The board ordered the leading Mercedes withdrawn; no source establishes whether Nallinger was on the telephone vote.

His strangest legacy is the rebirth of Audi. Nallinger wanted a Mercedes below the existing range and had Ludwig Kraus develop the front-wheel-drive W118 and W119. The company cancelled them, then sent Kraus and the engine to its Auto Union subsidiary. In 1965 that engine entered production under a name unused since 1940: Audi.

The same man who revived a rival also signed off the 600 and the Pagoda, advocated passenger-car diesels and set safety as the highest principle. His single-joint swing axle eventually acquired a vicious reputation; his compact Mercedes was rejected; his 230 SL was mocked as a sports car for men with pigskin briefcases. A programme broad enough to matter was broad enough to be wrong.

Epílogo

The rival he created

Fritz Nallinger retired at sixty-seven on the last day of 1965. Hans Scherenberg took over product development. Four months earlier the first postwar Audi had entered production with the engine of Nallinger's cancelled small Mercedes; the company he had inadvertently revived would spend the next six decades chasing his own.

His smaller Mercedes finally appeared in 1982 as the W201 190. Nallinger lived to see it. He died in Stuttgart on 4 June 1984, aged eighty-five, two years before Daimler-Benz appointed an independent commission to investigate its Nazi past and ten years before the resulting study appeared.

He left roughly three hundred patents, four children, an unpublished autobiography in the company archive and a technical lineage that is almost impossible to overstate. It is equally impossible to tell responsibly without Genshagen. The engineering achievement and the institution that enabled it are the same history.

Races were not absolutely necessary for progress in the production car, but they accelerated its development.
