The W124 was the E-Class before the letter — a range of saloons, estates, coupés, and cabriolets that raised Mercedes-Benz executive-car engineering to a new level of aerodynamic efficiency and structural integrity in the 1980s and 1990s.

Multi-link independent rear suspension, careful wind-tunnel development, and a broad engine palette from four-cylinder diesels to the hand-assembled 500 E with its Porsche-built body made the W124 the definitive executive Mercedes-Benz of its era. The E-Class name arrived in 1993, but the W124 chassis code persisted through the final model years.

Production spanned 1984 to 1997 across all body variants on the W124 platform. It was the car that translated W123 dependability into modern aerodynamics — and set the benchmark the E-Class still chases.

The two facelifts, major powertrain changes and visual cues that separate the W124 saloon series.

  1. 1984
    • The W124 saloon entered production with four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
    • The new body combined a 0.29 drag coefficient with the five-link rear suspension developed for the W201.
  2. 1985
    • Mercedes-Benz presented the electronically controlled 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system for six-cylinder W124 models.
  3. 1987
    • The 300 D Turbodiesel joined the European saloon range.
    • The 300 D Turbodiesel 4MATIC became the first turbo-diesel 4MATIC saloon.
  4. 1988
    • ABS became standard across the 124-series range in September.
  5. 1989
    • The first facelift added full-width lower body cladding with narrow polished trim.
    • The facelift added chrome inserts to the door handles and revised the interior.
    • Diesel ’89 prechambers reduced particulate emissions and raised naturally aspirated diesel output.
  6. 1990
    • The 500 E debuted with a 5.0-litre M119 V8 and flared front and rear wings.
    • Porsche handled bodyshell work and final assembly for the 500 E.
  7. 1992
    • M111 four-valve engines replaced the M102 units in the four-cylinder petrol range.
    • The M104 2.8- and 3.2-litre engines replaced the previous M103 sixes and 3.0-litre M104 in rear-wheel-drive saloons.
  8. 1993
    • The second facelift introduced the integrated radiator grille and clear front indicator lenses.
    • The range adopted E-Class names with the E prefix before the displacement number.
    • Four-valve OM605 and OM606 engines replaced the naturally aspirated five- and six-cylinder diesels.
  9. 1995
    • The E 500 ended production in April.
    • European W124 saloon production ended between June and August as the W210 replaced it.
  10. 1996
    • CKD kits for E 220 and E 250 Diesel assembly in India continued through June.
