The W210 traded the W124’s severity for oval eyes — four separate round headlamps under a single lens that split opinion instantly and then defined the Mercedes-Benz face for a decade.
Launched in 1995, it introduced Brake Assist and made ESP available across the range, and it carried the marque’s first common-rail CDI diesels. Engines ran from the 2.0-liter M111 four through the M104 and M112 sixes to the M113 V8, with AMG offering the E 50 and later the 354 PS E 55.
The estate is catalogued separately as the S210. Water-based paints of the era have thinned the survivors, but the W210 was the volume Mercedes-Benz of the late nineties.

- 1995
- The W210 saloon debuted in June with four elliptical headlamps and a 0.27 drag coefficient.
- Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde equipment lines offered distinct exterior and interior treatments.
- Belt-force limiters were standard for the front seats.
- 1996
- The E 420 added M119 V8 power with a five-speed automatic.
- The E 50 AMG became the first AMG-developed W210 flagship.
- Brake Assist became standard in December.
- 1997
- The electronic ELCODE key replaced the conventional mechanical ignition key.
- M112 V6 engines replaced the M104 inline-sixes in the E 240, E 280 and E 320.
- The M113-powered E 430 replaced the E 420.
- The E 55 AMG replaced the E 50 AMG with the 5.4-litre M113 V8.

- The E 220 CDI introduced common-rail direct-injection diesel power to the W210.
- 1999
- The July facelift revised more than 1,800 components.
- The facelift lowered the bonnet and front wings around reshaped headlamps.
- Window airbags became standard.
- A six-speed manual transmission replaced the five-speed manual.
- The E 270 CDI and E 320 CDI completed the diesel range’s conversion to common-rail injection.
