The A238 turned the W213 E-Class vocabulary into a four-seat Cabriolet, pairing a classic fabric roof with the widescreen cockpit, long-distance composure and driver assistance of the saloon family.

Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2017 and built in Bremen from June, it was larger and roomier than the A207 yet retained the open car’s defining details: frameless side glass, AIRCAP wind management, available AIRSCARF neck heating and a multi-layer acoustic soft top. For the first time, an E-Class Cabriolet could also be ordered with 4MATIC.

The 2020 update brought flatter LED headlamps, a redesigned grille and steering wheel, MBUX, newer assistance functions and a broader move to 48-volt engines. Production ended in October 2023 after US model year 2023; Mercedes-Benz then combined the two-door C-Class and E-Class roles in the CLE Cabriolet.

From the Geneva debut and the first 4MATIC Cabriolet to 48-volt power, the 2020 redesign and the final US model year.

  1. 2017
    • The A238 made its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and series production began at the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant on 26 June.
    • The four-seat Cabriolet launched with a multi-layer acoustic fabric roof, AIRCAP wind management, available AIRSCARF neck heating and the W213 family’s widescreen cockpit and assistance systems.
    • 4MATIC became available on an E-Class Cabriolet for the first time.
  2. 2018
    • The A238 reached US dealers for model year 2018 as the E 400 and E 400 4MATIC Cabriolet, both with the 329-hp M276 biturbo V6 and 9G-TRONIC.
    • Global additions included E 300 d, E 400 d 4MATIC and the 48-volt Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+.
  3. 2019
    • For US model year 2019, the 362-hp E 450 and E 450 4MATIC replaced the E 400 models, and the 429-hp Mercedes-AMG E 53 joined the range.
    • M264 mild-hybrid four-cylinder types began replacing the M274 in global E 200 and E 300 Cabriolets.
  4. 2020
    • The May 2020 model update introduced flatter LED headlamps, a diamond-pattern grille, revised lamps and bumpers, a capacitive-sensor steering wheel and the MBUX infotainment system.
    • Newer assistance functions could help form an emergency corridor, intervene during turns across oncoming traffic and park in marked spaces without adjacent vehicles.
    • The engine range moved further toward 48-volt assistance, including the M256 E 450 and revised OM656 E 400 d 4MATIC.
  5. 2021
    • The redesigned Cabriolet reached the United States for model year 2021 with the 3.0-liter M256 inline-six in E 450 models and the updated AMG-specific grille on the E 53.
    • The late global diesel range added the 1,993-cc OM654.820 E 300 d 4MATIC.
  6. 2022
    • Adaptive Highbeam Assist became standard on US E-Class Cabriolets, accompanied by new paint and trim choices.
  7. 2023
    • US model year 2023 retained E 450, E 450 4MATIC and Mercedes-AMG E 53 Cabriolets.
    • A238 production ended at Bremen in October; the A236 CLE Cabriolet subsequently combined the open two-door C-Class and E-Class roles.
