The W108 carried Mercedes-Benz's upper mid-range and full-size luxury saloons through the late 1960s — a clean, Paul Bracq-designed line that bridged the fintail era and the coming S-Class generation.
The range ran from carbureted six-cylinder 250 and 280 models to fuel-injected SE and long-wheelbase SEL variants, then to the 3.5-litre M116 V8 of the 280 SE 3.5 and SEL 3.5, and finally to the North American 280 SE 4.5 and SEL 4.5 with the larger M117. Crumple zones, improved suspension, and a more modern cabin marked a clear step forward from the Heckflosse cars it replaced.
Between 1965 and 1972, 359,522 were built.

- 1965
- The 250 S, 250 SE and 300 SE introduced Paul Bracq’s clean-sided luxury-saloon body.
- A hydropneumatic compensating spring maintained rear ride height under load.
- 1968
- The 280 S replaced the 250 S with a 140 hp 2.8-liter M130 engine.
- The 280 SE replaced the 250 SE and 300 SE with a 160 hp injected M130 engine.
- A long-wheelbase 280 SEL joined the steel-sprung W108 range.
- 1969
- The long-wheelbase 280 SE designation changed to 280 SEL.
- 1971
- The 280 SE 3.5 and 280 SEL 3.5 added the 200 hp M116 V8.
- North American 280 SE 4.5 and 280 SEL 4.5 models adopted the larger M117 V8.
- The six-cylinder 280 SEL left the range to make room for the V8 long-wheelbase model.
- 1972
- W108 production ended in September as the W116 S-Class replaced it.
