A long hood, four frameless side windows and no fixed B-pillar gave the C238 the airiness of a classic Mercedes-Benz coupé, now stretched over a true E-Class platform for the first time in generations.

Unveiled in December 2016 and built in Bremen, the C238 grew substantially over the C207: its 2,873 mm wheelbase added 113 mm, creating a more convincing four-seat grand tourer. Widescreen instrumentation, 64-color ambient lighting, available AIR BODY CONTROL and the contemporary E-Class driver-assistance suite brought the two-door into the W213 technology family.

The range expanded from four-cylinder gasoline and diesel models to V6 and later electrified inline-six flagships, including the AMG E 53 4MATIC+. A 2020 facelift introduced flatter lamps, MBUX, capacitive steering-wheel detection and newer 48-volt powertrains. Production ended in October 2023; the CLE Coupé then combined the former C-Class and E-Class two-door roles.

From the return to an E-Class platform through the 48-volt facelift and final 2023 model year.

  1. 2017
    • The C238 reached European dealers in spring 2017 after its December 2016 unveiling, returning the E-Class Coupé to an E-Class-derived platform and retaining the four-window pillarless body style.
    • Launch models were the E 200, E 220 d, E 300 and E 400 4MATIC, all initially documented with 9G-TRONIC; E 200 manual and additional 4MATIC versions followed.
    • Widescreen instrumentation, 64-color ambient lighting, available AIR BODY CONTROL and the W213 driver-assistance suite established the new technology baseline.
  2. 2018
    • The United States received the new-generation E 400 and E 400 4MATIC Coupés for model year 2018 with the 329-hp twin-turbo M276 V6 and nine-speed automatic.
    • The global range broadened with E 300 d, inline-six E 350 d and E 400 d variants, while Mercedes-AMG introduced the electrified E 53 4MATIC+.
  3. 2019
    • For the US market, the 362-hp E 450 replaced the E 400 and the 429-hp Mercedes-AMG E 53 joined the range, introducing a 48-volt integrated starter-generator and electric auxiliary compressor.
    • M264 four-cylinder phases brought EQ Boost to selected E 200, E 300 and E 350 models in global markets.
  4. 2021
    • The facelift arrived in the United States for model year 2021 with flatter LED headlamps, revised tail-lamp graphics, reshaped bumpers and a new steering-wheel family.
    • MBUX replaced COMAND, while capacitive hands-off detection and the newer driver-assistance generation expanded traffic-jam, emergency-stop and parking support.
    • The US E 450 adopted the 48-volt M256 inline-six; the AMG E 53 continued with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT nine-speed.
  5. 2023
    • E 450, E 450 4MATIC and Mercedes-AMG E 53 formed the final US model-year range.
    • C238 production ended at Bremen in October 2023. The C236 CLE Coupé followed, combining the former C-Class and E-Class coupé positions in one model line.
