Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W463)

Unveiled at Detroit in January 2018 and built from May 2018 as a 2019 model-year car, the second-generation W463 kept the iconic silhouette and the official W463 designation while changing virtually everything else — Mercedes said only three parts carried over.

Independent front double-wishbone suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, roughly 170 kg less weight despite larger dimensions, 9G-Tronic and S-Class-derived safety systems brought the G-Class into the modern era — including its first Euro NCAP crash rating.

The range centered on the M176 G 500 / G 550 and M177 G 63 AMG (the V12 was dropped), joined by OM656 diesels; specials ran through G 63 4×4² and Final Edition before the W465 replaced it in March 2024.

From the 2018 Detroit reveal to the 2024 hand-over to the W465. These are the changes that matter when dating a second-generation G.

  1. 2018
    • Detroit reveal (14 January); G 63 revealed at Geneva; series production starts in May at Magna Steyr, Graz.
  2. 2019
    • G 350 d (OM656) joins the range; first Euro NCAP test for any G-Class; US sales of the new generation.
  3. 2020
    • G 400 d added; China-market G 350 with M264 four-cylinder.
  4. 2022
    • G 63 4×4² returns with portal axles.
  5. 2023
    • Final Edition G 500 V8 (1,500 units); V8 G 500 / G 550 production ends in September.
  6. 2024
    • Second-generation W463 production ends in March; W465 successor launched 26 March 2024.
