Buying an R129 SL.
The R129 was engineered like Mercedes still expected to be judged on it — which is why so many survive, and why the gap between a good one and a tired one is wider than any price guide admits.

The car
Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989, Bruno Sacco's wedge replaced an SL that had run for eighteen years, and it arrived carrying more new technology than any roadster before it: integral seats with the belts mounted in the backrest, an electro-hydraulic soft top, and a pop-up roll bar that fired upright in three-tenths of a second if the car sensed an overturn.
Over twelve years Bremen built 204,940 of them across four engine layouts — straight-six, V6, V8 and V12 — from the 190 PS 300 SL to AMG's monstrous SL 73. The full production history, chassis details and every variant live on the R129 model page.
That over-engineering is the point of buying one today. Nothing on an R129 is fragile by design; what fails, fails from age and neglect. The model's weak spots are few, well documented and — with one electrical exception — all fixable at sensible cost, which makes condition and history worth far more than year or badge.

1992
The V12 arrives
The 600 SL crowns the range — 394 PS from the six-liter M120.
1993
New names
SL now precedes the number: SL 280 and SL 320 replace the 300s.
1995
First facelift
Freshened bumpers and trim; the electronic five-speed follows for V8 and V12.
1998
V6 and new V8
M112 and M113 replace the straight-six and the M119; 17-inch wheels arrive.
2001
The last SL
Production ends after 204,940 cars; the R230 takes over in Bremen.
Which engine
Six engine families served in the R129 over twelve years. None is a bad engine; they differ in character, in running cost, and in which of the model's known weaknesses apply.
300 SL
The single-cam 3.0-liter six of the launch 300 SL — 190 PS, unstressed and mechanically injected. Its KE-Jetronic wiring predates the harness trouble entirely; the slowest R129 is also the simplest.
300 SL-24 · SL 280 · SL 320
The twin-cam six: 231 PS as the 300 SL-24 and SL 320, 193 PS as the SL 280. Sweet and long-lived, but it seeps oil from the head gasket at the back of the block, and 1993–95 cars carry the troubled harness.
500 SL · SL 500
The 5.0-liter, 32-valve V8 of the 500 SL — 326 PS early, 320 PS from 1993 — and the engine that defines the car. Fundamentally robust; check the timing-chain guides on early engines and the harness on 1993–95 cars.
600 SL · SL 600
The 6.0-liter V12: 394 PS, utter silence, and double of everything including running costs. AMG stretched it to 7.3 liters and 525 PS for the SL 73 — the engine the Pagani Zonda later made famous.
SL 280 · SL 320
The 2.8 and 3.2-liter V6s of the 1998 facelift — 204 and 224 PS, lighter over the nose and free of every harness worry. Less classic in voice than the straight-six, but the easiest sixes to own.
SL 500
The 306 PS 5.0-liter V8 of the last SL 500s. Paired with the electronic five-speed, it is the most modern powertrain in an R129 — strong, frugal for its size and essentially free of vices.
What to check
An hour with a flashlight and a patient seller tells you more than any listing. Work through these in order — the first is the one that can make a cheap car expensive.
The wiring harness
Mercedes used biodegradable insulation in the early nineties, and on cars built from roughly 1993 to 1995 it crumbles with heat and age — rough running, misfires and check-engine lights follow, and unchecked it can take engine control units with it. The HFM straight-sixes and LH V8s of those years are the affected ones; earlier KE-Jetronic cars escape entirely. A replacement harness cures it for good, so ask for the invoice — "runs fine" is not evidence.
V12s of the period need a deeper look: beyond the engine harness, both throttle actuators and the airflow-sensor cabling degrade in the M120's heat, and actuators are expensive to overhaul. Budget accordingly, or buy one already done.
Engine
M104 sixes seep oil from the head gasket at the rear of the block — a weep is common, a drip needs pricing. On early M119 V8s, listen for chain rattle and ask about the timing-chain guides; plastic rails age. All engines: cold start, full service history, and no persistent warning lights.
Gearbox
The four-speed automatics are stout. The 722.6 five-speed that arrived for V8 and V12 in 1996 was sold as sealed for life, but Mercedes later prescribed fluid changes — look for evidence of a service roughly every 40,000 miles (60,000 km), and walk away from one that shunts when warm.
Roof and hydraulics
Twelve hydraulic cylinders raise, latch and stow the soft top, and thirty-year-old seals give up one by one: oil stains on the carpet behind the seats, a tonneau that sags, latches that no longer pull tight. Watch a complete cycle both ways, and check the roll bar too. Leaks are not a reason to walk away — resealing the system is a documented weekend job — but they are a reason to negotiate.
Suspension
ADS adaptive damping was standard on the V12 and optional elsewhere; its dampers cost four figures apiece, so make sure the warning lamp goes out and the car doesn't wallow. The standard suspension is conventional and cheap to keep right.
Body and rust
R129s resist rot better than most Mercedes of the era, but check the wheel arches, door bottoms, jacking points, the sills behind the plastic cladding and the trunk floor under the mats. A hardtop and its stand belong with the car — factor in their absence.
Interior and electrics
Everything is powered, so test everything: both seats and their memory (the control modules fail), all four windows, the instrument cluster, air conditioning and every soft-top switch. Raise the roll bar from its switch and make sure it latches back down.
Which one to buy
Condition beats specification, every time. A documented harness replacement, a dry roof and a folder of invoices are worth more than any engine choice, and the difference between the best and worst examples is far larger than the difference between an SL 320 and an SL 500.
As for sweet spots: the M104 SL 320 is the classic six-cylinder experience, the SL 500 is the car the R129 was designed to be, and post-1996 cars sidestep the harness question entirely. The V12s and AMGs are collector pieces — magnificent, and priced like it in upkeep. Buy the best history you can find, then keep the hydraulics healthy.
