Mercedes-Benz M119 V8 engine

Mercedes-Benz’s first DOHC V8 — four valves per cylinder, and the intake cams that moved with the revs.

Debuted at Geneva in March 1989 under the bonnet of the new R129 500 SL, the M119 replaced the two-valve M117 with an all-alloy open-deck block, Alusil-coated cylinder walls and twin overhead cams per bank. For the first time on a Mercedes passenger-car V8, electronic-hydraulic intake cam phasing could advance or retard timing by up to 20° — retarded for idle and high-rpm breathing, advanced through the midrange for torque. The 5.0-liter launched at 326 PS; a 4.2 followed, and the family later powered the Porsche-assembled W124 500 E, the W140 S-Class and the C140 coupés.

From the mid-1990s output was trimmed to 320 PS as full-throttle enrichment vanished for emissions, and coil-on-plug ignition replaced the twin distributors. AMG stretched the architecture to 6.0 liters for the E 60 and SL 60, then built a hotter 5.0 for the W210 E 50. By 1997 the three-valve M113 had begun to take over; the last M119s left the line in 1999.
