The DOHC V6 that replaced the three-valve M112 — variable cams, dual-length intake, and a broader spread of 3.0 and 3.5 liters.

Launched around 2004, the M272 used a 90° aluminum block, four valves per cylinder, continuous cam phasing on both banks and a magnesium variable intake. The 3.5-liter (92.9 × 86 mm) became the volume unit in C-, E-, CLK-, SLK- and SL-Class cars; a hotter CGI direct-injection tune and a smaller 3.0 filled the lower rungs.

It shared tooling philosophy with the related M273 V8 and powered everything from the R171 SLK 350 to the R230 SL 350 before the M276 took over in the early 2010s. Balance-shaft and intake-manifold wear became well-known service topics, but the architecture spanned nearly a decade of mid-size Mercedes.
