The R171 sharpened everything the original SLK had promised: crisper styling, a stiffer body, and — for the first time — a proper AMG halo car.

Launched for the 2005 model year, the second-generation SLK retained the folding Vario hardtop but wrapped it around a new platform shared with the C-Class, with a four-cylinder Kompressor entry point and six-cylinder power through the rest of the range, plus revised proportions that dropped the round headlamps for a sharper face.

The SLK 55 AMG, powered by AMG’s naturally aspirated 5.4-liter M113 V8, topped the line-up — later joined by an ultra-limited Black Series — before Mercedes-Benz built 191,862 examples of the R171 through to a February 2011 close of production.

R171 interior — A tighter, more driver-focused cabin than the R170 it replaced.
