Mercedes-Benz 722.9 7G-TRONIC Automatic Transmission transmission

The world’s first seven-speed passenger-car automatic — and Mercedes-Benz’s NAG2 workhorse.

Introduced in 2003 as type 722.9 (W7A700 and related classifications), the 7G-TRONIC was the first seven-speed torque-converter automatic in a production passenger car. Fully electronic, with a wide ratio spread and adaptive shift programs, it replaced the 5G-TRONIC behind most six- and eight-cylinder engines while the older 722.6 stayed on for V12s and some applications the new gearbox could not yet take. From 2010 the 7G-TRONIC Plus revision (W7C700 / W7X700 and related) added start-stop support and a refined converter.

It covered virtually the entire longitudinal Mercedes-Benz range — C-, E- and S-Class, CLS, CLK/CL, SL/SLK, M-/GL-/GLK-Class and R-Class — until the 9G-TRONIC took over from 2013. Licensed and related units also appeared in Infiniti and SsangYong products.

Stamped codes 722.901–.906 are from the old site’s parts table. Additional rows are grouped by factory classification (W7A400, W7X550, W7A700, W7C700, W7C1000) because public tables do not publish a complete .9xx-to-chassis map; chassis lists are representative. AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT/TCT variants share the NAG2 gearset with multi-clutch launch hardware. Non-Daimler licensees (Infiniti RE7R24A, SsangYong) are noted in the overview.
