Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (VS30)

The third Sprinter separated the large van into two related architectures. W910 introduced front-wheel drive, a lower load floor and additional payload for urban work; W907 retained rear-wheel drive for towing and heavy bodies, plus selectable and later permanent all-wheel drive. Panel vans, crew vans, passenger Tourers, chassis cabs and cutaway derivatives combine three roof heights, four body lengths and weight ratings extending beyond five tonnes.

Launched in 2018 with OM651 four-cylinder and OM642 V6 diesels — plus the market-specific M274 petrol engine — VS30 also introduced MBUX, the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant and connected Mercedes PRO services to a commercial van. A major 2021/22 drivetrain change standardized the cleaner 1,950 cc OM654 diesel across front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive models, brought the 9G-TRONIC automatic to rear drive, and replaced the engageable 4x4 system with torque-on-demand all-wheel drive.

The first eSprinter used W910 front-wheel-drive packaging, an 85 kW EM 780.703 motor and 35 or 47 kWh usable battery. The 2023 redesign moved the drive to the rear axle: W907 electric models combine a 100 or 150 kW EM 780.681 permanently excited synchronous motor with 56, 81 or 113 kWh usable batteries. The largest pack enabled up to 440 km WLTP; a 2023 efficiency run covered 475 km from Stuttgart to Munich and back without recharging.

VS30 interior
VS30 brought MBUX and connected fleet services to the Sprinter; the current system uses a 10.25-inch touchscreen.

One platform, hundreds of jobs.

VS30 side profile
Four body lengths, three roof heights and multiple wheelbases make the panel van only one member of a much larger platform family.

The connected Sprinter.

MBUX, a new drivetrain range, permanent all-wheel drive and the long-range rear-drive eSprinter.

  1. 2018
    • The third-generation Sprinter premiered in February and entered production in Düsseldorf in March, with market launch from June.
    • W910 front-wheel drive joined W907 rear- and selectable all-wheel drive, while panel van, Tourer, chassis cab and crew configurations carried forward the Sprinter’s modular body program.
    • MBUX with “Hey Mercedes,” Mercedes PRO connected services and a new assistance suite made the Sprinter the brand’s first fully connected van.
  2. 2019
    • Production of the first eSprinter began in Düsseldorf in December, using front-wheel drive and either a 35 or 47 kWh usable battery.
    • The 85 kW electric van retained an 11 m³ cargo compartment and offered 20 kW or optional 80 kW DC charging.
  3. 2020
    • The eSprinter entered regular European service, prioritizing predictable urban delivery routes over maximum range.
    • Digital fleet functions expanded through Mercedes PRO connect and the MBUX multimedia system.
  4. 2021
    • Mercedes-Benz announced a comprehensive drivetrain update: the 1,950 cc OM654 diesel replaced both OM651 and OM642 across all drive layouts.
    • A nine-speed automatic became available on rear-wheel drive, and a new torque-on-demand all-wheel-drive system replaced selectable 4x4 hardware.
  5. 2022
    • Updated diesel models reached markets with OM654 outputs up to 140 kW and the 9G-TRONIC automatic.
    • North American production transitioned from the 3.0-litre V6 to high-output OM654 four-cylinder diesel power.
  6. 2023
    • The second eSprinter premiered in February with rear-wheel drive, 100 or 150 kW motors and 56, 81 or 113 kWh usable batteries.
    • Production began in Charleston and Düsseldorf, followed by Ludwigsfelde; common body mounting points preserved compatibility with established conversions.
  7. 2024
    • The long-range eSprinter entered the North American market with the 113 kWh battery, followed in Europe by the full three-battery program.
    • Mercedes-Benz quoted up to 440 km combined WLTP range and up to 530 km in the urban cycle for the most efficient configuration.
  8. 2025
    • The standard MBUX display grew to 10.25 inches and added wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
    • Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Blind Spot Assist and the optional digital interior mirror expanded the safety and visibility package.
  9. 2026
    • The current Sprinter and eSprinter continue as Mercedes-Benz prepares the modular VAN.EA and VAN.CA successor architectures.

Current eSprinter models package the battery between the axles and use an integrated electric rear axle, preserving the cargo compartment.

Four cylinders, six cylinders, or electrons.

OM651, OM642 and M274 launched the generation; OM654 later became the global diesel, alongside two generations of EM 780 electric drive.
