Long before the electric smart, the C450 fortwo proved that a two-meter footprint could carry a three-pointed star — the original smart Coupé that brought Mercedes-Benz and Swatch's city-car joint venture to market.
Launched in 1998, the first-generation smart fortwo on C450 used a rear-mounted three-cylinder engine, tridion safety cell, and interchangeable body panels in a package barely longer than a parking space. Petrol and diesel variants served European cities where conventional cars could not fit; the design was deliberately playful, but the engineering was dead serious about crash protection and urban agility.
Production ran from 1998 to 2004 before the C452 second-generation car arrived. The C450 established smart as a Mercedes-Benz-adjacent brand and proved that premium engineering could survive radical downsizing.

- 1998
- Series production began at Hambach with the 2.5-metre city-coupé, a rear-mounted 599 cc turbo triple and six-speed automated manual transmission.
- Early cars are distinguished by the original almond-shaped headlamps and 599 cc M160 engine.
- 1999
- The 799 cc common-rail cdi became the smallest production diesel passenger-car engine of its period and established the diesel chassis 450.300-series variants.
- 2002
- The second facelift introduced larger twin-oval headlamps and revised front body panels.
- The limited smart BRABUS 1st edition previewed the factory performance range with a higher-output engine, firmer chassis tune, wider wheels and model-specific trim.
- 2003
- The model-year-2003 update introduced the 698 cc M160 petrol engine on later chassis 450.330/332.
- Full ESP replaced the earlier Trust Plus stability aid, a material safety and electronic difference when comparing late cars with 599 cc examples.
- 2004
- The city-coupé was renamed fortwo coupé as smart standardised its model names; the same 450-series structure and 698 cc petrol or 799 cc cdi powertrains continued.
