When Mercedes-Benz replaced the first-generation T1N Sprinter after a decade of dominance, the W906 NCV3 arrived as the second-generation Sprinter — a forward-control van architecture that modernized the firm's commercial backbone from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s.
Launched around 2006, the W906 shared the NCV3 platform across panel vans, crew vans, chassis-cabs, and minibus configurations, with OM646 and OM651 CDI diesels plus petrol options covering European and export markets. Improved crash structure, better cabin refinement, and expanded wheelbase and roof-height choices made the W906 the Sprinter most fleets remember from the 2010s — distinct from the later VS30 generation that followed in 2018.
Production ran from 2006 to 2017 before the third-generation Sprinter superseded it. The W906 closed the NCV3 chapter as Mercedes-Benz's second Sprinter platform — the commercial workhorse that bridged the original T1N and the connected, car-derived vans of the next decade.
