The W154 arrived for the new three-liter Grand Prix formula in 1938 — a V12 Silver Arrow that carried Mercedes-Benz's racing supremacy forward after the mighty W125 had run its course.
Designed to the 3-liter supercharged limit, the W154 mounted its V12 engine low in a light chassis with the same independent suspension philosophy that had made the Silver Arrows dominant. Rudolf Caracciola and Hermann Lang continued to front the factory team; the car claimed European Championship honors and Grand Prix wins against Auto Union and the rest of a dwindling field as war closed in on motorsport.
Only a handful of W154s were built for 1938–1939 — competition cars, not catalogue models. What survives in memory is a Grand Prix machine that closed the Silver Arrow era at the height of its power.
