Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Roadster (R230)

Launched in 2001, the R230 reinvented the SL around a folding Vario roof: a genuine roadster that became a steel-roofed coupe in sixteen seconds, ending three decades of lift-off hardtops.

It arrived loaded with technology from the Formula 1 era of the McLaren–Mercedes partnership — Active Body Control suspension, Sensotronic electro-hydraulic braking and keyless entry — and the SL 55 AMG did duty as the official F1 safety car.

Across a decade and two facelifts, Mercedes-Benz built 169,434 examples, from the V6 SL 280 to the SL 65 AMG, whose twin-turbocharged V12 delivered 612 PS and a driveline-protecting 1,000 N·m of torque.

Year by year.

US-model-year milestones from the original SBC cars through two facelifts, new engines and the final Grand Edition.

  1. 2003
    • The R230 reached the US as the SL 500 and SL 55 AMG, both with a 16-second Vario folding hardtop, Active Body Control and Sensotronic Brake Control.
    • The SL 55 AMG used a hand-built supercharged M113 V8, AMG Speedshift five-speed automatic, larger brakes and quad exhaust outlets.
  2. 2004
    • The SL 600 joined with a 493-hp, 5.5-litre twin-turbo M275 V12 and 590 lb-ft of torque.
    • US SL 55 AMG output rose to 493 hp with corresponding brake and suspension revisions.
  3. 2005
    • The SL 65 AMG became the flagship with a 604-hp 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 and 738 lb-ft of torque, electronically limited to protect the driveline.
  4. 2007
    • The first facelift brought revised bumpers, grille, side skirts, tail lamps and interior trim; a more direct steering ratio and second-generation ABC sharpened responses.
    • The SL 550 replaced the SL 500 with the 382-hp 5.5-litre M273 V8 and 7G-Tronic; the SL 600 and SL 55 AMG rose to 510 hp.
    • SBC remained fitted, so service history for its hydraulic control unit remains important even on first-facelift cars.
  5. 2009
    • The second facelift introduced a twin-power-dome hood, single-bar grille, new headlamps, LED running lights, reshaped bumpers and mirrors, and Direct-Steer variable-ratio steering.
    • The SL 63 AMG replaced the SL 55 with a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 V8 and seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission.
    • The limited SL 65 AMG Black Series used fixed carbon-fibre roof panels, wider composite bodywork and a 661-hp twin-turbo V12; it is structurally distinct from the folding-roof SL 65.
  6. 2011
    • Final US model year; Grand Edition trim marked the end of regular R230 production before the R231 replacement.

Six engine families powered the R230. The SL 65 AMG's twin-turbocharged M275 produces 1,000 N·m of torque — so much it had to be electronically limited.
