Three wheels and nowhere to go.
Carl Benz patented the automobile into a world with no filling stations, no garages, no driving licenses and no demand whatsoever. It took his wife to show everyone what it was for.
Mannheim, spring 1885. In the yard of a small engine works, a three-wheeled contraption of steel tube and wire wheels moves forward under its own power for the first time in history. Its maker cannot really steer it. Within moments it runs into a wall.
That is the whole of the automobile's first day: a few meters, a collision, and a man convinced he was right anyway. Everything you have ever driven descends from that afternoon.
Chapter I · 1885–1886
A vehicle powered by a gas engine.
Everyone else in the 1880s was bolting an engine to a carriage. Carl Benz did something categorically different: he designed the engine and the vehicle as one machine. A lightweight tubular steel frame. Three wire-spoked wheels, because he had no good way to steer two front ones and a bicycle already showed him how to make a wheel light. A differential on the driven rear axle. Rack-and-pinion steering worked by a tiller.
Through 1885 the range crept up from a few meters to real distances, and Benz took to testing at night on empty roads. By the end of the year he was confident enough to write it down. On 29 January 1886 he filed a patent for a "vehicle powered by a gas engine". It was granted on 2 November as DRP number 37435 — the document Mercedes-Benz still calls the birth certificate of the automobile.
The engine sat horizontally behind the seat: a single cylinder of 954 cc turning a great flywheel, good for 0.75 horsepower at 400 rpm and a walking-pace-plus 16 km/h. Details that sound ordinary now were each a problem someone had to solve first — high-voltage vibrator ignition with a spark plug, an evaporative carburetor, water cooling by thermosiphon evaporation, an automatic intake slide.
On 3 July 1886 the machine was driven in public on the Ringstrasse in Mannheim, and the newspapers duly reported that a carriage had gone down the street without a horse. Then very little happened. The whole thing cost 600 marks and, for a long time, nobody in Germany bought one.

Chapter II · the machine
What was actually new.
Benz was not primarily a vehicle man. He built stationary gas engines for a living, and he had spent years patenting the things an engine needs before anyone needed them in a car: a throttle system, battery ignition, the spark plug, the carburetor, the clutch, the gear shift, the water radiator. The Patent-Motorwagen is what happens when someone who owns all those pieces asks what they add up to.
The great flywheel lying flat behind the seat is the tell. A single cylinder firing once every two revolutions runs miserably without stored inertia, so Benz gave it a heavy wheel and laid it horizontally, with bevel gears carrying the drive down to the shaft beneath. Years later, when a second belt system was added to give the car a proper low gear, the flywheel was stood upright and the bevel gears vanished. The layout is a snapshot of an argument still being had.
What the car did not have was a fuel tank worth the name, a second forward gear that could climb anything steep, or brakes made of more than a block pressed against a pulley. Those gaps would be discovered by someone else, in public, at speed.

What they called it
The witch's cart.
That is what people shouted at him in the street, by his own account. The professional verdict was no warmer: in 1889 the librarian of the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin wrote that putting a petrol engine in a road vehicle "is no more likely to be promising than that of steam to the movement of road carts". Benz sold nothing at home for years. His first buyers were French.
Chapter III · August 1888
The first road trip in history.
Bertha Benz had funded the whole enterprise with her dowry and could not be named on the patent, because German law did not let a married woman hold one. On an August morning in 1888 — the exact date was never recorded — she took the newest car, the roomier Model 3, woke her sons Eugen and Richard, aged fifteen and fourteen, and left Mannheim before her husband was up. Her stated plan was to visit her mother in Pforzheim, roughly a hundred kilometers away. Her actual plan was publicity.
Nothing about the journey was easy. The car had no fuel tank, only a few liters held in the carburetor, so she bought ligroin — a cleaning solvent — at the town pharmacy in Wiesloch, which is why a chemist's shop in a small Baden town is remembered as the world's first filling station. The cooling water boiled away and had to be replaced from wells and streams.
A fuel line clogged and she cleared it with her hat pin. Ignition wire chafed through, and she insulated it with her garter. A blacksmith mended a drive chain. When the wooden brake blocks gave up, she had a cobbler nail leather onto them and so invented the brake lining. On the hills, two gears were not enough and the boys got out and pushed. She reached Pforzheim after dark and told Carl by telegram.
The press, which had been sniffy, turned. Invitations arrived. And Bertha came home with an engineering note: the car needed a lower gear. Benz added a third, and every car that followed had one. "So I was the first one to show that daddy's automobile was also good for long distances," she said later. Carl's own verdict: "She was much more courageous than me."

Chapter IV · 1887–1893
Selling something nobody needed.
The first customer was not German. In 1887 Émile Roger, a Paris bicycle manufacturer who already built Benz stationary engines under license, came to Mannheim and bought a car. He became the agent for France, sold one to Émile Levassor, and for years most Benz cars on earth were sold by a Frenchman to Frenchmen.
A month after Bertha's drive, in September 1888, Benz showed the car at an industrial exhibition in Munich and took a gold medal. He and Bertha drove it around the city; the local papers covered it, an illustrated weekly in Leipzig ran an engraving of the two of them at the tiller, and Scientific American reprinted it in January 1889. The automobile had its first press tour.
It still did not sell in volume. Roughly 25 Patent-Motorwagen were built between 1886 and 1893, across three evolving models that gained power, water capacity and eventually that third gear. In Britain the law itself was the obstacle until 1896; in Germany, Benz said, the barriers were just as high, only informal.
What changed things was not a better three-wheeler. It was the realisation that a car could be a product rather than a commission — something small, affordable and identical, produced before anyone ordered it.
Chapter V · 1894–1902
The first car built more than once.
The Benz Motor-Velocipede arrived in April 1894: four wheels now, a 1,045 cc single making 1.5 horsepower, around 20 km/h, and a price of 2,000 marks "complete with the finest fittings and lanterns". Benz had been a keen cyclist since 1867 and named it after the bicycle. Everyone called it the Velo.
Sixty-seven were built in 1894 and 134 in 1895, and by the time it left the catalogue in 1902 the Velo family had run to some 1,200 cars — the first series-production automobile in history. Benz, looking back in 1909, put it plainly: "The demand for this vehicle was quite literally overwhelming. What we made was sold immediately."
The company that could not give a car away in Mannheim in 1886 became, by the end of the century, the largest automobile manufacturer in the world.

Epilogue
The rival he never met.
About a hundred kilometers away in Cannstatt, in the same years, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were solving the same problem from the other end — a fast, light engine looking for something to move. The two firms would spend four decades as competitors and then, in 1926, become one company. Benz and Daimler both signed up as founding members of Germany's first automobile club in 1897, which may be the only time they were ever in the same room. "I never spoke to Daimler in all my life," Benz wrote.
The original car did not survive intact; around 1895 the company gathered up its scattered parts and reassembled it, and in 1906 gave it to the Deutsches Museum in Munich, where it still stands. In July 1925, at eighty, Carl Benz drove it one last time at the head of a parade of old machines — an old man steering the first car through a city full of cars, all of which were, in the end, his.
