The little big Mercedes.

Mercedes-Benz staked two billion marks on the idea that a compact car could still be a whole Mercedes. The 190 won that bet 1.9 million times over — and changed everything the company built afterwards.

In the late 1970s, drivers around Stuttgart kept passing a strange little saloon wearing a badge no dealership had ever stocked: Ushido.

The name was pure fiction — a mock-Japanese brand invented by the development department and screwed onto pre-production cars dressed in a mongrel mix of borrowed panels, so that spy photographers would look straight past them. Under the disguise sat the most expensive gamble Daimler-Benz had ever taken: the W 201, a Mercedes smaller than anything the company had dared to sell in a generation. The press would christen it the Baby-Benz. Stuttgart simply called it the 190.

Chapter I · 1953–1974

Three decades of almost.

Stuttgart had been here before. In the late 1950s it engineered a complete compact car — the W 118 and W 119 studies with their purpose-built M 118 engine — only to shelve it and hand the work to its subsidiary Auto Union, where the little Mercedes-that-wasn't became the Audi F103.

For the boom years that followed, a small Mercedes remained heresy. The company's authority was measured in wheelbase; dealers argued that a cheap star would tarnish the expensive ones. Every compact study died the same quiet committee death.

Then the world changed. In October 1973 the oil embargo emptied the autobahns, and in 1975 Washington answered with corporate average fuel economy rules that legislated squarely against big engines in Mercedes' largest export market. Suddenly the question was no longer whether Stuttgart could afford a small car — it was whether it could survive without one.

Development chief Hans Scherenberg had already put the answer on paper in January 1974, in a product brief whose first principle survived every committee that followed: "It's clear that this must be a typical Mercedes-Benz." Not a cheaper Mercedes. A smaller one. Over the next eight years that sentence would consume more than two billion marks.

Chapter II · 1974–1982

A brand called Ushido.

The engineers were told to shrink a Mercedes without diluting one, and they answered with the most sophisticated rear suspension yet fitted to a production car. Eight fundamentally different axle layouts were built and tested before Dr Kurt Enke's team — completed after his early death by Manfred von der Ohe — settled on five individual links per rear wheel, each wheel located precisely in every direction at once. Mercedes patented it, marketed it as the Raumlenker axle, and spent a sum estimated at over £200 million on it alone.

The idea had been maturing for a decade. Multi-link running gear had already carried the C 111 experimental cars past 400 km/h at Nardò — the W 201 turned a laboratory result into something a taxi driver could rely on for half a million kilometres.

The bill was paid elsewhere in the programme. A successor to the SL had been taking shape since the mid-1970s, but the compact came first: the project was shelved, the R 107 soldiered on for eighteen years, and the R 129 finally reached Geneva only in 1989 — nearly a decade late, and all the better for it.

Secrecy became its own engineering discipline. Pre-production cars went out wearing the fictitious Ushido badge and a deliberate jumble of mismatched panels; the press, catching glimpses, nicknamed the mule the "Reisschüssel" — the rice bowl — and looked for a Japanese newcomer that did not exist. Behind the curtain, the definitive shape was frozen on 6 March 1979, and by February 1982 pilot production was under way.

Chapter III · 1982–1983

No scaled-down S-Class.

The covers came off for the world's press in Seville in November 1982, and the car went on sale in Germany that December. The shock was physical: a good 30 centimetres shorter and 10 centimetres narrower than the W 123, the sober mid-class Mercedes of the day — no chrome prestige, a high tail, and unheard-of sporting pretensions. Was this still a real Mercedes?

It was — emphatically. The 190 was the first clean-sheet saloon of Bruno Sacco as head of design, and it announced the language every Mercedes would speak for the next fifteen years: taut trapezoidal surfaces he likened to a cut gemstone, a grille integrated into the bonnet for the first time, and a tail so high and abruptly cropped that aerodynamics read as architecture. The drag figure — 0.33, better than any production Mercedes before it — was the argument made visible.

The studio rule came from Peter Pfeiffer, the programme's principal designer, and it survived as a mantra: "Even a Baby-Benz has to look like a Mercedes-Benz, but not a scaled-down S-Class." The 190 had to carry the company's dignity at four and a half metres — presence through proportion, not through size.

The road tests settled the argument. auto motor und sport called the rear suspension "an axle such as the world has truly never seen" and found the 190 E the most agile Mercedes yet built, neutral where its ancestors had wagged their tails. The conservative clientele followed the engineers' logic, the order books filled — and two years later the W 124 arrived wearing the 190's ideas one size up.

The nickname

Baby-Benz.

Stuttgart never chose the name and never printed it in a brochure — the press coined it before the car even reached showrooms, and it carried a smirk: a Mercedes for people who couldn't afford a Mercedes. Then the car spent a decade dismantling the joke. By the end, Baby-Benz was said the way you say it of a firstborn — the small one that grew up to run the family business.

Chapter IV · 1983–1984

Sixteen valves.

To prove the chassis, Mercedes first aimed at rallying. Cosworth in Northampton was commissioned to develop a twin-cam, sixteen-valve cylinder head for the 2.3-litre four, good for some 320 bhp in competition trim — a rally weapon in a business suit.

Audi ruined the plan before it began. The four-wheel-drive Quattro rewrote rallying in 1981, and a rear-driven saloon suddenly had no business on a gravel stage. So the sixteen-valve engine was civilised for the road instead: the 190 E 2.3-16, revealed at Frankfurt in September 1983 with 185 PS, a drop of the ride height and a discreet rubber spoiler on that high tail.

The car introduced itself with a feat of pure endurance. From 13 to 21 August 1983, three near-standard 2.3-16s lapped the Nardò bowl day and night, covering 50,000 kilometres in 201 hours, 39 minutes and 43 seconds — three world records and nine class records, set with pit stops of twenty seconds and full services of five minutes.

Then came the marketing masterstroke. On 12 May 1984, twenty identical 2.3-16s opened the new Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit with the densest field of Formula 1 world champions ever gathered in one race — Lauda, Prost, Moss, Hunt, Scheckter, Brabham among them. They were all beaten by a 24-year-old Toleman rookie named Ayrton Senna, whose victory in an identical car told the world precisely what Mercedes wanted said about the 190 — and announced Senna at the same time.

Chapter V · 1985–1993

From 190 to C.

The provocation matured into the core of the range. A creamy 2.6-litre six answered BMW's 3 Series, the encapsulated 190 D diesels whispered where taxis once clattered, and from 1989 the Sportline trim let the smallest Mercedes lean properly into a corner. The car that had worried the board became its bestseller in waiting.

Motorsport escalated in step. To keep the sixteen-valver competitive in the DTM, Mercedes returned to the touring-car grid in 1988 with AMG as its works partner — and homologation begat monsters: the Evolution of 1989, then the Evolution II of 1990, 502 blue-black cars whose adjustable rear wing looked like a park bench and worked like a promise. In 1992 Klaus Ludwig took the DTM title in one, the 190's last racing season and its finest.

Production wound down in 1993 after 1,879,629 cars across Bremen and Sindelfingen — a compact that had out-sold every forecast and repaid its two-billion-mark tuition many times over.

Its successor arrived the same year wearing a letter instead of a number: the W 202, the first C-Class. The 190 didn't die so much as get promoted into a dynasty — the lineage that became Mercedes' best-selling model line, and the proof, renewed with every generation since, that the company's smallest car can carry its whole name.

Epilogue

The small car that made Mercedes modern.

The nickname that began as a smirk ended as a title of honour: the Baby-Benz proved that what makes a Mercedes has never been measured in metres. It rescued the company's American business, taught it weight discipline and aerodynamics, and put a five-link rear axle under practically every Mercedes built since.

Its truest legacy is invisible because it is everywhere: the C-Class that inherited its slot became the company's bestseller, the W 124 and every Sacco saloon after it spoke its design language, and the confidence to build a small Mercedes without apology descends directly from a memo written during an oil crisis. The 190 was the smallest car Stuttgart had made in a generation — and one of the biggest decisions it ever got right.
