The second-generation CL-Class wore its S-Class relationship openly — the C216 shared the W221 platform's engineering and brought the flagship coupé into the era of twin-turbocharged V8s and comprehensive driver-assistance systems.
Mercedes-Benz launched the C216 CL-Class in 2006 with a range of powertrains led by the twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 and, in the CL 600 and CL 65 AMG, twin-turbocharged V12 engines producing extraordinary torque. Active Body Control, Pre-Safe collision anticipation, and Night View Assist demonstrated the CL's role as technology showcase; the long, unbroken flanks and frameless glasshouse maintained the grand-coupé presence the nameplate had always promised.
Production continued until 2014, making the C216 the final CL-Class before Mercedes-Benz reunited the coupé with the S-Class nameplate on the C217. It remains the most technologically advanced CL generation.
