The modern Mercedes V12 — still three valves, still twin-turbo, rebuilt by Affalterbach for a world that no longer wants twelve cylinders.
Launched in 2012 under the R231 SL 65 AMG, the M279 keeps the M275’s 60° aluminum architecture, 82.6 × 93 mm bore and stroke and SOHC three-valve heads, then revises almost everything else: larger turbo spiral sections, new exhaust manifolds and wastegates, multi-spark twin ignition, start/stop and a lighter AMG sports exhaust. Peak torque stays electronically capped at 1,000 N·m so the gearbox survives; peak power on the AMG tune is 630 PS.
Beyond the SL 65 it powered the S 65 AMG, the G 65 AMG and the Maybach S 650 / S 680 — the last of which still carries a V12 into the present with 4MATIC. The closely related M277 covers non-AMG S 600 duties. In an industry racing toward four cylinders and batteries, the M279 is Stuttgart’s final twelve-cylinder stand.
