They built the car for the tire.
Everyone else develops a tire to suit a car. A tire company in Hesse did it the other way around — and got a 5.9-meter, 700-horsepower one-off Maybach out of the deal.
Nardò, Sunday 1 May 2005. The sun comes up over the Apulian scrub at 05:45 into a cloudless sky, and a man in a race suit and helmet is already sitting in a black coupé the size of a limousine. At 07:09 Klaus Ludwig completes his first lap of the 12.5-kilometer bowl at 346 km/h. One lap later, the number he was hired to produce arrives: 351.45 km/h.
Nothing about that morning was really about the car. The point of the exercise was the four contact patches underneath it — a series-production road tire, on sale to anybody, asked to carry two and two-thirds tonnes of Maybach past 350 km/h and keep doing it. The car was the advertisement. It just happened to be one of the most extravagant advertisements ever built.
Chapter I
A tire in search of a car.
Gummiwerke Fulda has made tires in Hesse since 1900 and has belonged to Goodyear since 1962. Preparing for its centenary, the company went through its own archive — and rediscovered something it had almost forgotten it had commissioned. In 1938 Fulda had gone to the Frankfurt coachbuilder Dörr & Schreck and asked for a car that could hold more than 200 km/h for long stretches, so that the company could test tires at speeds no ordinary vehicle could sustain.
Dörr & Schreck brought in Maybach Motorenbau for the chassis and the aerodynamicist Reinhard Freiherr Koenig-Fachsenfeld for the shape. The result, delivered in 1939, was the Maybach SW 38 Stromlinienwagen: a three-seater with a long tapering tail, enclosed rear wheels and a paneled underbody, whose drag coefficient of 0.25 was roughly a third of what its contemporaries managed. On its own chassis it was about 60 km/h faster than a conventional body. On 27 July 1939 its builders wrote that the car "lies well on the road and the streamlined shape already makes itself felt at 60 km/h."
Then the war came, the car disappeared, and it has never been seen since. It had barely done the job it was built for. That unfinished business is what the archive handed back to Fulda's board in 2000.
The connection to Stuttgart was made by René Staud, an automotive photographer with a foot in both camps, who put Fulda's managing director Bernd J. Hoffmann in a room with Leon Hustinx, Maybach's sales and marketing director. The partnership was sealed at the Frankfurt IAA in 2003. Hoffmann liked to state the arrangement as plainly as possible: other manufacturers develop a tire for a car; Fulda developed a car for the tire.
The brief was four lines long. Base it on a Maybach 57. Find around 700 PS. Reach 350 km/h. And get it through the TÜV, because a show car that cannot legally drive on a public road is no use to a marketing department. Twenty-five months later it was done.

Chapter II
Whatever happens, no retro design.
That sentence was Fulda's only formal styling stipulation, and it is the reason the Exelero looks nothing like the car that inspired it. The 1938 streamliner had to be legible in the result without the result becoming pastiche.
Fulda had form here: Pforzheim transport-design students had already drawn the company's show truck in the mid-nineties. So professors James Kelly and Lutz Fügener picked four students from the sixth semester and set them to work under identical conditions, while Harald Leschke ran the project from the DaimlerChrysler side and Peter Pfeiffer, the group's design vice-president, kept an eye over the whole thing. The students did a practical semester inside the design center at Sindelfingen, working alongside the professionals with the same tools.
Roughly eight months later the winner was Fredrik Burchhardt, then 24 — not because his drawing was the wildest, but because it was the most buildable, and because the kinship between the two generations of Maybach read most clearly in it. Burchhardt concentrated the entire historical quotation in one place, the upright chrome grille, and let everything behind it be modern. He would later draw the Maybach 57 SC as well.
When the engineers laid the 1938 car's dimensions over the Maybach 57 platform they got a surprise: the modern wheelbase was some 290 mm longer, but the width and height were very close. That coincidence, in the official account, "simplified a whole series of structural measures" — and is arguably why the project was feasible at all.

Chapter III
Everything bent toward one number.
The engine went to the specializts at Untertürkheim, who took Maybach's twin-turbo V12 out to 5.9 liters, fitted larger turbochargers, doubled the intake-cooling capacity with four intercoolers and cleaned up the airflow. It came off the bench with 700 PS and 1,020 Nm, then ran roughly a hundred hours non-stop — the equivalent of some 15,000 km of road use. Jürgen Weissinger, Maybach's head of development and the project's technical manager, noted the one advantage of working on a car this size: "We have the space in this car for a lot of coolers."
Aerodynamics came next, because at 350 km/h nothing else matters. Repeated wind-tunnel sessions produced a drag coefficient of 0.28 with mirrors and 0.26 without, on a frontal area of 2.55 m², and lift coefficients of 0.09 at the front axle and 0.1 at the rear — "absolutely nothing," as Weissinger put it. A three-part spoiler deploys from the trailing edge of the rear deck as speed rises. Even the final drive was sacrificed, shortened from 2.93 to 2.41 for no reason other than the top-speed figure.
A Maybach 57 shell came off the production line and went to Stola in Turin, who built the aluminum and carbon-fiber body over it. The cabin had to move rearward toward the rear axle to get the long-hood proportion, and that single styling decision cascaded through the whole car: a second bulkhead, a relocated steering column, relocated pedals and gearshift, a repositioned A-pillar and door, a moved fuel filler.
The wheels were their own engineering exercise. Ronal produced the show set by milling each rim from a 257 kg block of metal down to a finished 23 kg — and because the turbine pattern is directional, all four had to be made individually, two left-handed and two right. The rims that actually did the record run came from ATP-Excentric in Bremen, chosen because their cross-spoke design could be paneled over completely. On wheels this large, that was worth another three or four km/h.

The product
Carat Exelero.
The car is named after the tire, not the other way around. Fulda's new ultra-high-performance line launched in 33 sizes and 39 versions, thirteen of them entering series production for the first time, and was the first tire on the German market to carry TÜV Süd certification. Its most extreme dimension was 315/25 ZR 23, homologated beyond 350 km/h — and sold in shops, to anyone. Proving that claim is the entire reason this Maybach exists.
Chapter IV
Sunrise at Nardò.
Stola rolled the finished car out in Turin in March 2005 and handed it to its client. In mid-April it ran at around 200 km/h on the Sindelfingen test track to check engine, brakes and handling; at the end of the month it went to the DaimlerChrysler proving ground at Papenburg, where the team tried spoiler positions until the car felt settled. Peter Kühlwein of TÜV Automotive signed off the safety-relevant hardware — seats, belts, weight distribution — and the Exelero became a road-legal automobile.
The team reached Nardò on the Thursday. Thursday and Friday went on rechecking the car, Saturday on verifying the measuring equipment and running trial laps with Weissinger himself driving. On Sunday morning they handed it to Klaus Ludwig — three times a DTM champion, three times a winner at Le Mans — and inflated the tires to 3.6 bar.
Two laps was all it took. Fulda claimed a world record for saloons on series-production tires, measured with an FIA-standardized unit; worth noting that this describes the measuring method rather than a sanctioned FIA record class, since no such class exists. Ludwig's reaction afterwards was about the rubber, which was rather the point: "It was unbelievable how easily the vehicle could be handled at this record speed. Particularly the tires conveyed an absolutely safe feeling."

351.45 km/h exactly, carrying 2.66 tonnes. Ten days before anyone outside the project had laid eyes on the car, it had already done the only thing it was built to do.

Chapter V
Nobody could stop calling it Batman's car.
The premiere came on the afternoon of 11 May 2005 at the Tempodrom in Berlin, and the press reaction was unanimous in a way Fulda cannot have planned. Autoweek's report opened on Batman, and had to concede that the Mercedes technician prepping the car said the same thing unprompted. The NZZ ran it as Der schwarze Ritter and suggested it would have made a serviceable staff car for Darth Vader.
Up close the car was more charming than menacing, largely because it was so obviously real. The center console is lifted straight out of a Maybach 57 limousine, navigation system and all. The interior is black leather, neoprene and gloss carbon with red inserts, red seat piping and red four-point harnesses. There are two pedals, an ordinary automatic shifter, helmets on the parcel shelf, a fuel filler cap borrowed from an Audi TT, and no cupholders. The air conditioning controls came across from the donor car but the compressor did not, so it gets hot.
Then the internet got hold of it. Jay-Z drove the Exelero in the 2006 video for "Lost One" and has been described as its owner ever since; he was not. In May 2011 Bryan "Birdman" Williams announced on Twitter that he had bought it for $8 million and would have it repainted red. That August a representative of the actual owner told MotorAuthority that Birdman had never paid. It was never repainted, and no confirmed sale price for this car has ever been published — the eight-million figure was an asking price attached to a deal that collapsed.
The truth is quieter. René Staud, who brokered the project in the first place, was its long-time owner. It passed through the restoration specializts at Mechatronik, and since July 2023 it has stood in the Nationales Automuseum — The Loh Collection in Dietzhölztal, where anybody can go and look at it. It is still wearing its original tires.
Epilogue
The most expensive tire advert ever made.
The Exelero left no direct descendants. Stola showed a lightly restyled derivative called the Phalcon in 2007 and announced twenty-five of them; only the prototype was built. What the project did leave behind was a demonstration — of what Maybach would build for a customer with a blank sheet of paper, which was precisely the individualization argument the brand was trying to make to the people already buying 57s and 62s.
And it did the job Fulda hired it for, twice over. It proved a production tire at a speed almost nothing on sale could reach, and it finished the errand the lost 1938 streamliner never got to run. Twenty years later, the car built to sell rubber is the one everyone remembers, and the tire it was named after has been out of the catalog for years. Advertising rarely outlives the product it was made for. This one is in a museum.
