One body. Three futures.
In the winter Detroit’s own industry was collapsing, Mercedes arrived with a car in sunshine colors that refused to pick a side: battery, hydrogen or range extender — same car, your choice.
Detroit, January 2009. Cobo Hall is half empty; two of the three hometown giants are weeks from bankruptcy. Onto this gloomiest of stages Mercedes wheels a pair of tall little hatchbacks in glowing yellow-green, one trailing a bright orange charging cable — like spring arriving in the wrong season.
The name was BlueZERO — zero, as in local emissions. But the real idea wasn’t any single drivetrain. It was that one body, engineered once, could carry three completely different electric futures — because nobody in 2009 knew which one would win.
Chapter I
The floor that waited ten years.
The trick was under the carpet. When Mercedes designed the original A-Class in the 1990s, it gave the little car a double-layer sandwich floor — partly for crash safety, and partly, even then, so that batteries or hydrogen tanks could one day live between the layers, out of harm’s way.
That day took a decade to arrive. In the BlueZERO, every major drive component sat within the sandwich floor between the axles: low center of gravity, full five-seat cabin above, crash-protected hardware below — no matter which of the three drivetrains was fitted.
All three variants shared one electric motor — 100 kW peak, 70 kW continuous — and 320 N·m from the first millimeter of throttle travel. 0–100 km/h took under 11 seconds; top speed was capped at 150 km/h to protect range.
Even the palette was a system: each drivetrain got its own ALU-BEAM shade — yellow for the battery E-CELL, green for the hydrogen F-CELL, orange for the range-extended E-CELL PLUS. You could read the future from across the hall.

Chapter II
Pick your range.
The E-CELL’s 35 kWh battery bought 200 kilometers. The F-CELL’s hydrogen stack — descended from Mercedes’ decade of fuel-cell fleets — went well past 400, with the efficiency of roughly 81 mpg on gasoline. And the E-CELL PLUS reached 600 kilometers by carrying a tiny gasoline generator for the days the plug was too far away — 100 of those kilometers purely electric.
Mercedes called the concepts “near-series,” and meant it: these were fully engineered vehicles, not sculptures. The question they asked — battery, hydrogen, or both with a backup? — is one the industry still hasn’t finished answering.


Epilogue
The shape of things to come.
Squint at the BlueZERO and you see the next B-Class — the W246 of 2011 wore its proportions and much of its face. The hydrogen variant became real almost immediately: the B-Class F-CELL entered small-series production within the year. The battery version took until 2014, as the B-Class Electric Drive.
The range extender — the orange one — never made it. The market answered that question by itself: batteries got better faster than anyone in Cobo Hall dared predict in 2009. But the underlying idea, one architecture engineered for several energy futures at once, became Mercedes doctrine for the electric age.
