Mercedes-Benz Executive Sedan (W114)

The W114 was the petrol and six-cylinder half of Mercedes-Benz's Stroke-8 program — a modern, square-shouldered executive range that replaced the aging fintail saloons and introduced a new middle class for the 1970s.

Sedans ran from 230 and 250 models through fuel-injected 250 CE and 280 E variants, with coupés on shorter wheelbases offering a sporting alternative to the four-door line. Optional automatic transmissions and a range of inline-six engines made the W114 the upwardly mobile choice in the Strich Acht family.

Produced from 1968 to 1976, the W114 accounted for 465,317 cars. Together with its diesel sibling W115, the Stroke-8 platform approached two million units — one of the most successful Mercedes-Benz architectures of the twentieth century.

The six-cylinder engine, safety and facelift changes across the /8 saloons and coupés.

  1. 1968
    • The six-cylinder 230 and 250 launched the W114 saloon range.
    • The 250 alone used twin front bumper blades as an exterior hierarchy cue.
  2. 1969
    • The pillarless 250 C and fuel-injected 250 CE coupés joined the range.
    • The coupé used a 45 mm lower roof and shorter passenger compartment than the saloon.
  3. 1970
    • The 250 adopted the 2.8-liter M130 engine while retaining its 250 badge.
  4. 1972
    • The 280 and fuel-injected 280 E introduced the twin-cam M110 engine.
    • The 280 C and 280 CE extended the M110 range to the coupé.
    • Long rear bumpers and twin exhaust outlets identified the 280 models.
  5. 1973
    • Front head restraints and automatic seat belts became standard in March.
    • A four-spoke safety steering wheel became standard before the main facelift.
    • The September facelift introduced a lower, wider grille.
    • Internally adjustable door mirrors and ribbed dirt-shedding taillights were fitted.
    • The front number plate moved onto the bumper.
    • The saloon’s front vent windows were deleted while the coupé retained them.
    • The 230 saloon was renamed 230.6.
  6. 1976
    • Production ended as the W123 range replaced the /8.
