The engine lived behind the passengers — a rear-mounted four-cylinder in a conventional-looking sedan that made the Typ 170 H the last Heckmotor Mercedes-Benz built for ordinary street use in the pre-war era.
Mercedes-Benz developed the W28 as the refined successor to the rear-engined 130 idea: a 1.7-liter side-valve engine driving the rear wheels through a four-speed gearbox, with independent front suspension and a body that read as a normal family car rather than an engineering experiment. The layout freed cabin space and kept mechanical noise aft of the occupants, even as the industry was moving back toward front-engine orthodoxy.
Production ran from 1936 to 1939, and the published archive tables record 1,507 examples on the W28 chassis — a modest but meaningful run that closed the chapter on rear-engined Mercedes passenger cars until very different times.
