Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Coupé (C209) (C209)

Sharper creases and a wider stance signaled maturity — the C209 CLK Coupé took the compact two-door formula established by the C208 and refined it into a more athletic, more technically advanced machine.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the second-generation CLK Coupé in 2002 on the W209 platform, sharing architecture with the C209/A209 range. Styling moved toward the brand's early-2000s design language; engines expanded to include the 5.0-liter and 5.4-liter AMG V8s that made the CLK 55 and CLK 63 genuine performance cars. The C209 also served as the basis for the CLK DTM AMG limited edition — a aerodynamic homage to Mercedes-Benz's Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters program.

Built from 2002 to 2009, the C209 CLK Coupé was the last generation to carry the CLK name before Mercedes-Benz consolidated its coupé strategy around the E-Class and C-Class two-doors.

Year by year.

AMG specials, DIRECT CONTROL and the main 2006-model-year facelift — the material C209 CLK changes.

  1. 2003
    • The C209 reached the US as CLK 320 and CLK 500 coupés with pillarless side glass, four-link front suspension and standard ESP.
    • The CLK 55 AMG added a 362-hp 5.4-litre M113 V8, AMG brakes, suspension, bodywork and quad exhaust outlets.
  2. 2004
    • The European-only CLK DTM AMG used a 582-hp supercharged M113, widened composite bodywork, fixed-back seats and extensive chassis changes; 100 coupés were built.
    • Mid-year updates introduced DIRECT CONTROL axle bearings and steering, revised controls and audio/navigation, optional steering-wheel shift buttons and 7G-Tronic on the CLK 500.
  3. 2006
    • The main facelift brought a V-shaped lower intake, three-bar grille, revised tail lamps, new instruments and higher-grade switches and trim.
    • New M272 V6 models replaced CLK 240/320 with CLK 280/350; CLK 220 and CLK 320 CDI diesels joined in Europe.
  4. 2007
    • The CLK 55 AMG gave way to the CLK 63 AMG with the naturally aspirated M156 V8 and seven-speed AMG Speedshift.
    • The 5.5-litre M273 V8 replaced the 5.0-litre M113; US cars were badged CLK 550 while many other markets retained CLK 500.
  5. 2009
    • Final US model year for the C209; the E-Class Coupé replaced it even though it used the subsequent 207-series designation.
  6. 2010
    • Production of remaining C209 variants ended for markets outside the US.
