Mercedes-Benz G-Class for Rescue and Special Operations (W464)

While the civilian G-Class went independent at the front in 2018, Mercedes-Benz kept building a Geländewagen with a rigid axle at each end — and kept it off the price list. Model series 464 replaced the W461 for states and authorities from 2022, and it is the version no private buyer can order.

The premiere came at the G-Class Experience Center in Graz on 28 September 2021, with the biggest redesign in the professional G’s history: a new chassis with 50 mm more suspension travel, a wider track that also clears snow chains, 221 mm of ground clearance, 660 mm of fording depth, gradeability of 100 per cent and a tilt limit of 54 per cent, all carried on the ladder frame with three 100-per-cent differential locks. The common-rail OM656 six delivers 183 kW (249 PS) and 600 N·m — 35 per cent more power and 50 per cent more torque than the W461 — while consuming up to eight per cent less fuel, and it will run on low-grade fuel or kerosene. A nine-speed automatic replaces the old five-speed, crawling at 2–14 km/h in LOW RANGE.

Two bodies were offered at launch: a five-door station wagon seating four, rated at 3.5 tonnes gross with a one-tonne payload including 200 kg on the roof, and a chassis with single cab for a crew of two, rated at 4.9 tonnes gross with 2.5 tonnes of payload. Both tow 3.5 tonnes. Standard equipment runs to EMC protection against interference pulses, MIL-STD and STANAG certification, infrared and camouflage lighting, a splash-proof instrument panel and the sealed Emergency Override System, which lets a crew override every engine protection measure to drive out of a danger zone; the 24-volt electrical system usual in military vehicles is available on request. More than 60,000 G-Class vehicles have been delivered for rescue and special operations since 1979, and as of 2025 no civilian version of the 464 had been offered.

Every model.

Two body variants at market launch, both G 350 d — the five-door station wagon (BA06) and the chassis with single cab (BA09). Mercedes-Benz has not published Baumuster suffixes for either.
