The W120 Ponton 180 was the car that remade Mercedes-Benz as a volume manufacturer — the entry-level Ponton that brought diesel reliability and affordable six-cylinder aspiration to post-war middle-class buyers.
Petrol 180, 180a, 180b, and 180c models used four-cylinder engines in the Ponton's unitary body, while 180 D, 180 Db, and 180 Dc diesels established the reputation for million-kilometer longevity that would define Mercedes-Benz fleet sales for decades. Simple, honest engineering wrapped in Friedrich Geiger's clean Ponton shape.
Built from 1953 to 1962, the W120 program totalled 271,217 cars. It was the foundation of the Ponton era — and the car that proved Mercedes-Benz could build the world as well as the flagship.
