The W120 Ponton 180 was the car that remade Mercedes-Benz as a volume manufacturer — the entry-level Ponton that brought diesel reliability and affordable six-cylinder aspiration to post-war middle-class buyers.

Petrol 180, 180a, 180b, and 180c models used four-cylinder engines in the Ponton's unitary body, while 180 D, 180 Db, and 180 Dc diesels established the reputation for million-kilometer longevity that would define Mercedes-Benz fleet sales for decades. Simple, honest engineering wrapped in Friedrich Geiger's clean Ponton shape.

Built from 1953 to 1962, the W120 program totalled 271,217 cars. It was the foundation of the Ponton era — and the car that proved Mercedes-Benz could build the world as well as the flagship.

  1. 1953
    • The petrol 180 introduced Mercedes-Benz’s unitary Ponton body.
  2. 1954
    • The 180 D added the OM636 diesel engine and 12-volt electrical equipment.
  3. 1955
    • Petrol and diesel models adopted a low-pivot single-joint swing axle.
  4. 1957
    • The 180 a replaced the side-valve engine with a 65 hp overhead-camshaft 1.9-liter unit.
    • A broader grille, larger taillights and revised interior identified the 180 a.
    • Rear number-plate lamps moved into the bumper guards across the range.
  5. 1958
    • Front-door vent windows became standard on the 180 and 180 D.
    • Larger wheel covers with a more prominent star replaced the earlier design.
  6. 1959
    • The revised petrol model was renamed 180 b.
    • The revised diesel model was renamed 180 Db.
  7. 1961
    • The 180 c received revised camshaft and valve gear.
    • The 180 Dc adopted the 2.0-liter OM621 diesel engine in a 48 hp tune.
  8. 1962
    • Production of the 180 c and 180 Dc ended in October.
