As the Stuttgart 200 matured, Mercedes-Benz needed a larger, more capable successor — and the Stuttgart 260 filled that gap, carrying the familiar city name onto a bigger six-cylinder chassis for buyers who wanted more car without leaving the middle class.
The Stuttgart 260 offered increased displacement and a more generous wheelbase than the 200 it replaced, suited to heavier saloon bodies and more comfortable touring coachwork. It continued the naming convention that tied Mercedes-Benz's volume models to the city where the merged company had its roots, keeping the brand accessible to a broad audience.
From 1929 to 1935, 8,314 examples were built — a substantial run that confirms the Stuttgart line's importance in Mercedes-Benz's interwar sales. The 260 bridged the gap between entry-level six-cylinder motoring and the larger Typ 200 and Typ 170 models that would define the mid-1930s.
