The AMG GT was too good to keep closed — the R190 Roadster removed the roof and added a fabric hood, preserving the front-mid-engined layout and transaxle balance that made the C190 coupé one of the finest-handling Mercedes-AMG cars ever built.
Mercedes-AMG introduced the GT Roadster on the R190 chassis with a three-layer insulated soft top that folded in eleven seconds, maintaining the aluminum spaceframe's rigidity through additional underbody bracing. The same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter M178 V8 powered the range from the GT Roadster through the GT C and GT R variants, with power outputs reaching 585 PS. Without a fixed roof, the long bonnet and side-exit exhausts read even more dramatically — a front-engined roadster in an era dominated by mid-engine exotics.
The R190 AMG GT Roadster extended the dedicated AMG sports-car program into open-air motoring — a convertible built with the same single-minded performance focus as its C190 coupé sibling.

- 2018
- The AMG GT Roadster reached the US with a power-operated fabric roof and 469-hp 4.0-liter biturbo V8; the roof opened or closed in 11 seconds at up to 31 mph.
- The 550-hp GT C Roadster added the coupé GT R’s wider rear body, active rear-wheel steering, electronically controlled differential and variable performance exhaust.
- A limited Edition 50 GT C marked AMG’s 50th anniversary.
- 2020
- The update added a digital instrument cluster, revised center-console controls, AMG DYNAMICS handling logic and detail changes to lighting and trim.
- 2021
- The base GT Roadster rose to 523 hp in the US and absorbed equipment formerly used to distinguish higher-output versions.
- R190 production ended; the next open-top AMG flagship arrived as the R232 SL rather than another GT Roadster.
