Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Coupé (C199) (C199)

Two British partners, one German supercar — the C199 SLR McLaren was the product of a brief alliance between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, a carbon-fibre grand tourer with a supercharged AMG V8 and a top speed that embarrassed most contemporary exotics.

Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Automotive jointly developed the SLR on a carbon-fibre monocoque built in Woking, with the 5.4-liter supercharged M155 V8 assembled by AMG in Affalterbach. The long bonnet, side-exit exhausts behind the front wheels, and active aerodynamic spoiler defined a silhouette unlike anything else in the Mercedes catalogue; the Speedster, 722 Edition, and Stirling Moss variants pushed the concept further. It was neither a McLaren F1 successor nor a conventional Mercedes — deliberately occupying a category of one.

Built from 2003 to 2010, the C199 SLR McLaren Coupé and its variants represented a unique moment in Mercedes-Benz history — a super-GT born of Formula One partnership that remains among the most dramatic road cars ever to wear the three-pointed star.
