Mercedes-Benz Citan, T-Class and EQT (W420)

Model series 420 turned one compact van into three distinct Mercedes-Benz products: the working Citan, the passenger-car T-Class, and the battery-electric eCitan and EQT.

Series production began at Maubeuge in September 2021. The 4,498 mm standard body arrived first as a two-seat panel van or glazed Tourer; 4,922 mm long versions later added 3.7 m³ of Citan cargo space or a third seating row for up to seven people. All use front-wheel drive. Combustion choices were the 1,332 cc M200.731 petrol and 1,461 cc OM608.915 diesel, paired with six-speed 700.720/721 manuals or the optional seven-speed 700.800 dual-clutch transmission.

The eCitan and EQT replaced those engines with the 90 kW EM 780.690 drive unit and a 45 kWh usable battery. Mercedes-Benz quoted up to 284 km WLTP, 22 kW AC charging and 80 kW DC charging, with the battery protected beneath the floor so the basic packaging survived intact. The family was short-lived: Mercedes-Benz announced in April 2025 that it would leave the Small Van segment, and production ended in the second quarter of 2026 without a direct successor.

MBUX, an electric parking brake and passenger-car switchgear distinguished the 420 from a purely utilitarian van cabin.

W420 side profile
The standard 4,498 mm body; long versions stretched overall length to 4,922 mm and the wheelbase to 3,100 mm.

A five-year family.

From the Citan launch through the T-Class, electric derivatives, long bodies and Mercedes-Benz’s withdrawal from the Small Van segment.

  1. 2021
    • The second-generation Citan debuted in August and entered production in Maubeuge in September as a 4,498 mm panel van and glazed Tourer.
    • Five combustion outputs launched: Citan 110 and 113 petrol, plus 108 CDI, 110 CDI and 112 CDI diesel; the most powerful petrol and diesel could be ordered with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
    • Standard Active Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist and ATTENTION ASSIST moved the compact commercial van closer to Mercedes-Benz passenger-car safety equipment.
  2. 2022
    • The T-Class arrived in May as the private-customer derivative, with body-colored trim, MBUX, seven airbags and a passenger-car equipment hierarchy.
    • T 160, T 180, T 160 d and T 180 d covered the same M200.731 petrol and OM608.915 diesel families as the Citan.
    • Production of the battery-electric eCitan began in September; the series EQT was presented in December.
  3. 2023
    • The EQT 200 and eCitan reached customers with a 45 kWh usable battery, 90 kW motor, 22 kW AC charging and up to 80 kW DC charging.
    • Long-wheelbase Citan and T-Class bodies stretched to 4,922 mm; the passenger version added two removable third-row seats.
  4. 2024
    • Long eCitan and EQT derivatives completed the family, preserving the 90 kW powertrain while adding cargo length or seven-seat flexibility.
    • Automatic-transmission availability widened to additional Citan diesel variants.
  5. 2025
    • Mercedes-Benz announced that it would concentrate future van investment on midsize and large vehicles and leave the Small Van segment the following year.
  6. 2026
    • Production of the Citan, eCitan, T-Class and EQT ended in the second quarter without a direct Mercedes-Benz successor.

Twin sliding side doors served every derivative, while a tailgate or asymmetric rear doors tailored the body to passengers or cargo.

Petrol, diesel, or 45 kWh.

The M200.731 petrol and OM608.915 diesel served the combustion range; eCitan and EQT used the 90 kW EM 780.690 electric drive.
