The W105 Ponton 219 occupied the narrow band between Mercedes-Benz's four-cylinder executive cars and its six-cylinder luxury saloons — a longer, more formal Ponton for buyers who wanted six-cylinder refinement without the cost of a full W180.
Launched in 1956 on the Ponton body's final evolution, the 219 used the 2.2-liter six shared with contemporary Mercedes-Benz executive models, wrapped in the same unitary construction and understated Sindelfingen styling that defined the Ponton era.
Production ran through 1959, with 27,845 examples built. The 219 was never the star of the Ponton range, but it filled a logical gap — and today it remains one of the more overlooked six-cylinder Pontons.

- 1956
- The 219 combined the 220 a six-cylinder engine and long nose with the shorter 190 passenger compartment.
- Series production began with an 85 hp M180 engine.
- 1957
- Higher compression raised output to 90 hp.
- The optional Hydrak automatic clutch became available.
- A revised interior and bumpers accompanied the update.
- Rear number-plate lamps moved into the bumper guards.
- 1959
- Production ended in July as the W111 six-cylinder fintail range replaced the Ponton.
