AMG’s 4.0-liter hot-V biturbo — two M133 fours joined at the crank, and the engine that retired the naturally aspirated 63.
It arrived in 2015, wet-sumped in the C 63 and dry-sumped as the M178 in the AMG GT. Putting both turbochargers inside the 90° vee shortened the path from turbine to inlet and shrank the whole installation, and the rest followed AMG’s current thinking: a closed-deck aluminum crankcase, piezo direct injection, Nanoslide-coated bores instead of liners, and a dry weight of around 209 kg. The cylinder itself was carried straight over from the M133 four at 83 × 92 mm — two of those engines, in effect, joined at the crankshaft.
From C 63 and E 63 through S 63, G 63, GT 63 4-Door and Aston Martin partnership cars, the M177 became AMG’s default eight. Cylinder deactivation and, from 2019, 48-volt assistance kept it ahead of emissions rules while the modular family also spun off the milder M176 for non-AMG G and S models.
