The machine that refused to be a tractor.

Designed in 1945 to feed a broken country, first built by a jewelry factory — and still in production eight decades later. Nothing else on wheels has a story like the Unimog.

Schwäbisch Gmünd, 9 October 1946. On the grounds of a factory that spent the war making gold and silver handicrafts, an engineer named Heinrich Rößler climbs onto a strange little machine with four equal wheels, no roof and no name. He lets out the clutch and drives — the first meters of a vehicle that will one day plow fields, fight fires, shunt trains, clear alpine passes and park higher on a volcano than anything on wheels ever.

It existed because Germany was hungry. It was allowed to exist because it was demonstrably not a weapon. And it was designed by a man whose previous job — building aircraft engines for Daimler-Benz — had just been abolished by history.

Chapter I · 1945–1948

A device, not a vehicle.

In the autumn of 1945, Albert Friedrich — until recently head of aircraft-engine design at Daimler-Benz — looked at a country that could no longer feed itself and drew a machine for it. Not a tractor: a universal motorized implement with four equal-size driven wheels, power take-offs front and rear, a small cargo bed, and a track width of exactly 1,270 millimeters — the space between two rows of potatoes.

The US military administration granted the rare production order in November 1945, precisely because the machine had no conceivable military purpose. Development began on 1 January 1946 at Erhard & Söhne in Schwäbisch Gmünd — a jewelry factory, because in 1946 you built where you were allowed to build.

Rößler, another ex-Daimler engineer, joined weeks later and did the core design work. Portal axles tucked the drivetrain above the wheel centers for ground clearance; the prototypes ran a 1.7-liter gasoline engine only because the intended diesel wasn't ready. By late 1947 the 25 PS OM 636 diesel was standard.

The name arrived as a margin note. Engineer Hans Zabel, tired of writing "Universal-Motor-Gerät für Landwirtschaft" on drawings, shortened it to Unimog — official from 20 November 1946. The abbreviation would outlive every product name in the company's portfolio.

Chapter II · 1948–1951

Six hundred, by hand.

At the German Agricultural Society fair in Frankfurt in 1948, the Unimog met the public for the first time — and the response settled the question of demand. What was missing was a factory. Erhard & Söhne couldn't build in series, so production went to machine-tool maker Gebrüder Boehringer in Göppingen, which had another motive to say yes: building agricultural machinery shielded the company from postwar dismantling.

About ninety workers built up to fifty Unimogs a month — no assembly line, largely by hand. In three years, exactly 600 units of the first 70200 series were made. They wore no star: the badge was a pair of ox horns forming a U. Even the military demand came from a neutral direction — 44 of the 600 went to the Swiss Army.

Around 120 of those hand-built Boehringer machines survive today, and a good number of them still work for a living. It set the tone: nobody throws a Unimog away.

The first badge

The ox head.

Before the three-pointed star, the Unimog wore a pair of ox horns curved into the letter U — a working animal's emblem for a working machine. Daimler-Benz replaced it with the star in 1953, but the ox head never really left: it remains the mark collectors look for, proof of a Unimog built before the Unimog belonged to anyone big.

Chapter III · 1951–1955

Gaggenau, for 600,000 marks.

Demand outgrew Göppingen almost immediately, and in 1950 Friedrich and Rößler handed the whole Unimog operation — design, team and rights — to Daimler-Benz for 600,000 German marks. It may be the best money the company ever spent: by 1962, a single model series was selling nearly fifty-five million marks' worth of vehicles a year.

Production restarted in 1951 at the truck plant in Gaggenau, and rational manufacturing did what hand-building couldn't: over a thousand Unimogs left the works in the first seven months alone.

In 1953 came the 401 and 402 with a closed, all-steel cab — promptly nicknamed "frog eye" for its upright headlamps — and with them the Mercedes star replaced the ox head on the hood. Rößler stayed on as head of Unimog development at Daimler-Benz; the inventors had sold the machine, not abandoned it.

Gaggenau and the Unimog would be synonymous for half a century. As the locals put it: Unimog isch Gaggenau, und Gaggenau isch Unimog.

Chapter IV · 1955–1980

The one the soldiers wanted.

The vehicle approved because it had no military purpose turned out to be exactly what every army wanted. French officers of the occupation watched early Unimogs testing in the hills, bought a batch — and then asked Daimler-Benz for something bigger: a 1.5-tonne off-road truck for ten to twelve soldiers, with a gasoline engine to suit NATO fuel policy.

The answer, in 1955, was the Unimog S — the 404 series — with a 2.2-liter Mercedes six and approach and departure angles of 45 degrees. It became the definitive military Unimog and the fire brigades' darling, and by the end of its 25-year run it was the most successful Unimog ever made — around 36,000 of them served the Bundeswehr alone.

Chapter V · 1962–2002

Every job on earth.

From 1962 the heavy-duty 406 series added the muscle — 65 horsepower, later more — and the range grew into a complete family. What had been drawn for potato fields now cleared snow off alpine passes, mowed motorway verges, carried fire pumps into forests, shunted freight cars on rail wheels and hauled expeditions across every continent. Around a thousand different implements can hang off a Unimog's mounting points and power take-offs.

That universality was the original 1945 idea, simply allowed to compound for decades. In its best year, Gaggenau built more than ten thousand of them.

The Unimog outlasted trends, competitors and its own market slumps. In August 2002, after 51 years and the overwhelming majority of all Unimogs ever made, the last one left Gaggenau and production moved down the road to the truck plant at Wörth am Rhein, where it continues today.

Gaggenau kept the soul: the town's old works now houses the Unimog Museum, where the surviving Boehringer prototype U 6 lives among the machines it fathered.

Chapter VI · today

Higher than anything on wheels.

The modern range splits in two: the U 219 to U 535 implement carriers that keep municipalities, railways and farms running, and the extreme off-road U 4023 and U 5023 with torsionally flexible frames and single tires — the ones expedition builders and disaster-relief agencies queue for. More than 375,000 Unimogs have been built since 1949.

In December 2019, two U 5023s supported an expedition up Ojos del Salado in Chile, the world's highest volcano, and parked at 6,694 meters above sea level — a world altitude record for wheeled vehicles. The machine invented to straddle two rows of potatoes now holds the high ground of the entire planet.

Epilogue

The longest brief.

Nearly every vehicle concept of 1945 is extinct. The Unimog is not just alive — it is still recognizably the same drawing: four equal wheels, portal axles, power take-offs, and a bed for whatever the job needs. Friedrich's specification has survived eight decades, two changes of factory, and the transformation of its maker from Daimler-Benz to Daimler Truck.

That may be the quiet lesson in all of it. The 300 SL needed beauty and the AMG needed speed, but the Unimog needed only to be useful — and usefulness, it turns out, is the most durable kind of legend.
