Sensuous surfaces replaced the W210’s crispness, and beneath them sat Sensotronic Brake Control — an electro-hydraulic system with no mechanical link between pedal and calliper.

Produced from January 2002, the W211 spanned the supercharged M271 four, the M112 and M272 V6s, the M113 and M273 V8s and the 6.2-liter M156 of the E 63 AMG, with CDI diesels from the OM646 four to the OM629 V8. AIRMATIC DC, 7G-TRONIC and the first PRE-SAFE system arrived with it.

About 1.27 million saloons were built before production ended in 2009 — the E-Class at its widest reach.

SBC, diesel and AMG milestones through the 2,000-component facelift — the changes that define a W211.

  1. 2003
    • The W211 reached the US as E 320 and E 500 sedans with Sensotronic Brake Control, ESP, two-stage front airbags and four-link front suspension.
    • AIRMATIC Dual Control was standard on the E 500 and optional on other models.
    • The E 55 AMG arrived during the model year with a 469-hp supercharged M113 V8, AMG Speedshift automatic, AIRMATIC AMG suspension and larger brakes.
  2. 2004
    • The E 320 4MATIC and E 500 4MATIC added all-wheel drive, both retaining the five-speed automatic.
    • The seven-speed 7G-TRONIC automatic replaced the five-speed on the rear-drive E 500.
  3. 2005
    • The E 320 CDI returned a diesel E-Class to the US, using the OM648 inline-six and five-speed automatic.
  4. 2006
    • The E 350 replaced the E 320 with the M272 V6 and 7G-Tronic on rear-drive cars; 4MATIC retained the five-speed automatic.
  5. 2007
    • A 2,000-component facelift introduced a more pronounced grille, reshaped bumper, revised headlamps and tail lamps, and interior material and control upgrades.
    • PRE-SAFE and NECK-PRO became standard, while conventional vacuum-assisted hydraulic brakes replaced SBC — the most consequential service distinction between early and late W211s.
    • The E 55 AMG became the E 63 AMG with a naturally aspirated M156 V8 and 7G-Tronic AMG Speedshift; the E 500 became E 550 in the US with the M273 V8.
    • The E 320 BlueTEC replaced the US-market OM648 E 320 CDI with an OM642 V6 and seven-speed automatic.
  6. 2009
    • Final US model year for the W211 sedan before the W212; late cars retain conventional brakes and the facelift safety and engine package.
