The minivan that saw the future.

It looked like a purple people carrier. It was carrying radar cruise control, voice commands, keyless entry and lane assist — in January 1991.

Detroit, January 12, 1991. Mercedes chooses the year’s first big show to reveal a research vehicle it calls, simply, F 100. Visitors walk around a smooth violet one-box car and peer through the vast windshield at something genuinely strange: the driver’s seat is in the middle.

Never before, the company said, had so many ideas and new technologies been packed into one fully operational car. It was not bragging. It was a list of the next thirty years.

Chapter I

The best seat in the house.

The layout began with a statistic: the average car carries only 1.2 to 1.7 people. So the F 100 gave its one guaranteed occupant the safest place in the structure — dead center, far from every crumple zone — with two passengers seated staggered behind, and room for five in all.

There were no B-pillars. The front doors swung out swan-style, taking part of the floor and roof with them; the rear doors slid. Getting into the safest seat in the car was easier than getting into most.

Underneath lurked a second heresy: front-wheel drive, on a Mercedes, six years before the A-Class made it official.

And on the roof, a field of solar cells ran the ventilation while the car was parked — an idea that surfaced on the Maybach a decade later.

Chapter II

A shopping list for three decades.

The F 100’s real cargo was its equipment. Gas-discharge xenon headlamps. A windshield wiper that paused when the rain did. A chip card that replaced the key. Voice commands. A radar that held distance to the car ahead, warned of collisions, and watched the blind spot. Tire-pressure sensors. A camera instead of a rearview mirror. In 1991, every item on that list was science fiction; within twenty years, every single one was a Mercedes production feature.

Epilogue

Right about everything but itself.

The one prediction that failed was the car itself: no Mercedes ever put the driver in the middle, and the tall one-box luxury car stayed a niche. But the F 100 founded a dynasty — the F 200, F 300, F 400, F 500 and F 700 research vehicles all followed its template of packing the far future into one drivable machine. As a technology forecast, it may be the most accurate concept car ever shown.
