Mercedes-Benz’s first transverse automatic — a torque converter bolted to a three-shaft gearbox.
The 722.7 (W5A180) was developed for the sandwich-floor W168 A-Class and later the W414 Vaneo. Unlike the planetary 722.6 5G-TRONIC, it uses spur gearsets like a manual, with a torque converter, oil pump and electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutches selecting each ratio. Maximum input torque is about 180–205 N·m.
It covered A 140 through A 210 and the related Vaneo petrol and diesel range until about 2005. The second-generation A-Class moved to the 722.8 AUTOTRONIC CVT and conventional manuals; later compact Mercedes-Benz models use the 7G-DCT and 8G-DCT.
