Mercedes-Benz’s automated manual — a six-speed gearbox that shifted itself, with mixed reviews.

SEQUENTRONIC is an electro-hydraulically automated version of the 716.6 six-speed manual (option code 424): clutch and shifts are computer-controlled, with a sequential gate and optional steering-wheel buttons. Factory designations include SG-S250/6.1, SG-S270/5.5, SG-S370/6.1 and SG-S400/5.3, spanning roughly 250–400 N·m. It was offered on the R170/R171 SLK, R230 SL, W203 C-Class, C208/C209 CLK and W210/W211 E-Class.

In practice the pause between gears drew criticism, and buyers increasingly chose the 5G-TRONIC or 7G-TRONIC instead. SEQUENTRONIC faded as dual-clutch and modern torque-converter automatics took over. The underlying 716.6 also remained available as a conventional clutch-pedal manual.
