The G 5 took the six-wheeled Geländewagen idea and made it a production reality — an all-terrain Mercedes-Benz built in thousands for military, police, and expedition duty through the war years.
Mercedes-Benz engineered the W152 as the successor in spirit to the G 4: selectable four-wheel drive, robust straight-six or eight-cylinder engines depending on variant, and open or partially enclosed bodies suited to rough ground and parade use alike. The G 5 was simpler to manufacture than its three-axle predecessor but no less capable in the field — the type that most people picture when they think of pre-war Mercedes Geländewagen.
Between 1937 and 1943 the archive tables record 5,278 examples on the W152 chassis — far and away the highest production figure of any pre-war G-series Mercedes. The G 5 outlived its six-wheeled predecessor and defined off-road Mercedes-Benz for a generation.
