The X222 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class restored the Maybach name within the Mercedes-Benz fold — an ultra-luxury extension of the W222 S-Class with additional rear-passenger space, equipment, and presence.
Built on a lengthened S-Class platform, the X222 offered Maybach S 400, S 500, S 560, and S 650 variants with V8 and V12 power, rear-seat executive seating, and trim standards above even the standard S-Class long-wheelbase. It was the modern Großer Mercedes — formal, quiet, and unapologetically focused on those seated behind the driver.
Launched in 2015, the X222 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class remains the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz passenger-car range. It carries a name revived from history and engineering derived from the finest saloon the firm knows how to build.

Year by year.
Maybach’s return, the Pullman and the 2018 powertrain update — the defining X222 milestones.
- 2016
- Mercedes-Maybach returned to the US as the S 600, using an 8-inch wheelbase stretch over the long-wheelbase S-Class and placing the rear seats behind the door opening for greater privacy.
- Standard executive rear seats, extensive sound insulation, Magic Body Control and a 523-hp twin-turbo V12 distinguished it from the regular W222.
- The 6.5-meter Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman entered production for selected markets with a partitioned vis-à-vis rear compartment.
- 2018
- The facelift replaced the US S 600 with S 560 4MATIC and S 650 designations, adding the updated S-Class lighting, steering-wheel controls, Intelligent Drive and ENERGIZING Comfort systems.
- S 560 adopted a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 and nine-speed automatic; S 650 retained the 6.0-liter biturbo V12 and seven-speed automatic.
