The W180 Ponton 220a and 220 S carried Mercedes-Benz's six-cylinder luxury line through the mid-1950s — the larger Ponton saloons, coupés, and cabriolets for buyers who wanted presence without stepping up to the hand-built Adenauer cars.
The 220a arrived in 1954 with a 2.2-liter six in the Ponton unitary body, followed by the higher-output 220 S with improved trim and, in some markets, coupé and cabriolet variants on dedicated coachwork. These were the cars that made six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz ownership attainable for the successful professional class.
By the end of 1959, 86,823 had been built.
