Unimog Medium-Series Implement Carrier (BR418) (BR418)

The medium half of the pair Mercedes-Benz launched in 1992 shared its sibling's angular cab and flattened bonnet, then added a litre of displacement and two more tonnes of gross weight.

Where the light 408 replaced the 407, the BR418 — MBU, the medium Unimog series — took over from the 417, and the two were presented together at Hanover in May 1992 as the U 110 and U 140 beside the smaller U 90. The cab, the choice of normal or raised roof and the optional sight-channel bonnet all carried across; the difference was underneath, where a 3,972 cc four-cylinder OM 364 replaced the five-cylinder OM 602 and lifted permissible gross weight to 7.2 tonnes. Three wheelbases were catalogued — 2,830 mm, 3,470 mm for the long "L" models and 3,900 mm for a handful of the longest — alongside a cab-and-drivetrain-only Triebkopf, Baumuster 418.000, sold as a drive head for bodybuilders and implement work.

The range thinned as it went: the U 110 left the price list in 1995, and Euro II compliance brought a small enough power increase that the U 130 was simply renamed U 140. Gaggenau stopped building the 418 in 1998, three years ahead of the 408 and with no direct replacement — 1,223 vehicles across seven Baumuster, after which the implement-carrier 405 line introduced in 2000 covered the ground both series had held.

Production highlights from 1992–1998.

  1. 1992
    • Presented at the Hanover commercial vehicle show in May as the successor to the 417, launched together with the light-duty 408.
    • New angular cab shared with the 408, at normal height or with a raised roof, with the sight-channel bonnet optional.
    • Catalogued as the U 110 and U 130, with a Triebkopf drive-head variant for bodybuilders.
  2. 1995
    • The U 110 left the range, leaving the more powerful models to carry the series.
  3. 1998
    • Production ended at Gaggenau after 1,223 vehicles, with no direct successor; the 405 implement carrier arrived in 2000.

Engines.

One four-cylinder family in two states of tune. Euro II lifted the intercooled version to 103 kW, which is where the U 130 became the U 140.
