The W902 carried the second weight class of the first-generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter — the T1N platform's mid-light commercial range that bridged urban delivery and heavier cargo duty.
Model designations from 208 CDI through 216 CDI reflected the arrival of common-rail diesel technology in the early 2000s, supplementing the earlier OM601 and OM602 naturally aspirated units. The W902 shared the T1N's forward-control body and car-derived front suspension with the W901, W903, and W904 variants.
Produced from 1995 to 2005, the W902 was part of the Sprinter generation that established Mercedes-Benz dominance in the European large-van market — a commercial Baureihe built with passenger-car engineering standards.

- 1995
- The Sprinter launched in January with the W902 208 D; the 212 D and petrol 214 completed the initial range, followed by the 210 D in 1997.
- 2000
- Common-rail CDI engines replaced the indirect-injection diesels: four-cylinder OM611 power created 208/211/213 CDI models and the five-cylinder OM612 powered the 216 CDI.
- The update brought a deeper hood and grille, a redesigned dashboard with integrated gear lever and optional Sprintshift automated manual transmission.
- 2003
- The safety facelift added clear-lens headlamps, a modified grille and revised interior details.
- Non-adaptive ESP availability expanded, with fitment depending on body type and gross vehicle weight; load-adaptive ESP arrived only with the successor Sprinter.
