The W251 R-Class was Mercedes-Benz's answer to a question nobody else was asking — a luxury people carrier based on a passenger-car platform, positioned between the E-Class estate and the V-Class van.

Part saloon, part MPV, the R-Class offered three rows of seating, a car-like driving position, and engines from four-cylinder CDI through V6 and V8 petrol, with 4MATIC available across much of the range. The ML 63 AMG's R 63 sibling proved AMG would build almost anything with sufficient cylinders.

Launched in 2005, the W251 left most Western markets in 2012 but continued in long-wheelbase form for China until production ended in September 2017.

The R-Class from its US debut through the R 63 AMG, BlueTEC and comprehensive 2011 redesign.

  1. 2006
    • The R-Class reached the United States in long-wheelbase R 350 and R 500 form with three seating rows and standard 4MATIC.
  2. 2007
    • The one-year R 63 AMG combined a 503 hp M156 V8 with AMG suspension, brakes, wheels and exterior trim.
  3. 2008
    • A first update revised the bumpers and equipment while adding rear-wheel-drive and seven-seat configurations in selected markets.
  4. 2009
    • The R 320 BlueTEC replaced the US-market R 320 CDI with 50-state emissions certification.
  5. 2011
    • The comprehensive facelift replaced the bonnet, fenders, grille, headlamps and front bumper and revised the rear bumper and lamp graphics.
    • LED daytime running lamps, NECK-PRO front head restraints and optional Blind Spot Assist updated the lighting and safety equipment.
    • The US range was reduced to the 4MATIC R 350 and R 350 BlueTEC.
