Introduced in 1971 to replace the "Pagoda," the R107 became Mercedes-Benz’s longest-running SL — one silhouette carried from the six-cylinder 280 SL to the V8-powered 560 SL across eighteen model years.
Under a body that barely changed, the range moved through three engine families: the inline-six M110, the small-block V8 M116, and the larger-block V8 M117 — each identified by its own chassis, engine and transmission codes as displacement grew from 2.8 to 5.6 liters and emissions rules reshaped the lineup market by market.
Mercedes-Benz built 237,287 roadsters over the run — part of a wider 300,175-unit chassis-107 family that also included the fixed-roof SLC coupé — making the R107 the best-selling SL of its time and the benchmark its successor, the R129, had to beat.

Two major facelifts and nearly two decades of running changes shaped the R107 — from the oil-crisis six to the North American 560 SL.
- 1971
- Series production began with the 3.5-liter M116-powered 350 SL.
- A folding fabric roof and detachable hardtop were standard.
- 1973
- The 450 SL added the 4.5-liter M117 V8.
- North American 4.5-liter cars changed from 350 SL to 450 SL badging for model year 1973.
- 1974
- The 280 SL joined the range with a fuel-injected 2.8-liter M110 straight-six.
- 1976
- Bosch K-Jetronic began replacing D-Jetronic on the V8 models.
- 1980
- A four-speed automatic replaced the three-speed unit.
- The cabin and steering wheel were updated to match the contemporary S-Class.
- An aluminum bonnet and front spoiler provided exterior dating cues.
- The 380 SL replaced the 350 SL.
- The 500 SL became the new flagship.
- Anti-lock brakes became optional.
- 1981
- The “Energy Concept” update raised compression on the 380 SL and 500 SL.
- Revised cam timing and shorter axle ratios reduced fuel consumption.
- Electronic idle control accompanied the engine update.
- 1982
- A driver airbag became optional.

- The September facelift introduced 15-inch wheels.
- Revised front suspension accompanied the facelift.
- The M103-powered 300 SL replaced the 280 SL.
- The 420 SL replaced the 380 SL.
- The 500 SL gained KE-Jetronic and electronic ignition.
- The 560 SL joined the North American, Australian and Japanese ranges for model year 1986.
