Sold alongside the R107 roadster from 1971, the C107 SLC was Mercedes-Benz’s fixed-roof, long-wheelbase take on the same platform — a four-seat touring coupé rather than a two-seat open car, built through 1981.

It shared the roadster’s engines and evolved the same way, from the six-cylinder 280 SLC through small-block V8s to the 5.0-liter 450 SLC 5.0 and 500 SLC, using the same M110 and M116 engine and 722-series transmission families as the R107.

Mercedes-Benz built 62,888 examples of the SLC. Unlike the roadster it was based on, the coupé was discontinued in 1981 without a direct SL successor, while the R107 roadster continued in production through 1989.

Ten years of coupe-specific and shared-with-SL updates — from the first 350 SLC to the short-lived 1980 facelift that ended with the SEC.

  1. 1971
    • Mercedes-Benz presented the 350 SLC with a fixed roof and four full-size seats.
    • A wheelbase 360 mm longer than the R107 created the additional cabin space.
  2. 1972
    • Series production began in February with the 3.5-liter M116-powered 350 SLC.
  3. 1973
    • The 450 SLC added the 4.5-liter M117 V8.
  4. 1974
    • The 280 SLC added the fuel-injected 2.8-liter M110 straight-six.
  5. 1976
    • Bosch K-Jetronic replaced D-Jetronic on the V8 models.
    • A heated rear window became standard.
  6. 1977
    • Mercedes-Benz presented the 450 SLC 5.0 with an all-aluminum 5.0-liter M117 V8.
    • Aluminum bonnet and boot panels reduced weight.
    • A black rear spoiler provided the clearest exterior dating cue for the 5.0.
  7. 1979
    • Rear seat belts became standard equipment.
  8. 1980
    • A four-speed automatic replaced the three-speed unit.
    • The cabin and steering wheel were updated to match the contemporary S-Class.
    • The 380 SLC replaced the 350 SLC.
    • The 500 SLC replaced the 450 SLC and 450 SLC 5.0.
    • A front spoiler became standard across the range.
  9. 1981
    • SLC production ended in September after 62,888 cars.
    • The W126-based SEC replaced the C107.
